The first two home in the Gold Cup, Courage Mon Ami and Coltrane, are set for a rematch in the Goodwood Cup, the feature on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood 2023.

Frankie Dettori’s mount got the better of Oisin Murphy’s ride by just ¾l so it is very much game on between the pair while the shorter trip could benefit Ballydoyle’s leading hopeful, Emily Dickinson, who was a further 4l behind when finishing fourth in Ascot’s big race.

Last year’s St Leger hero Eldar Eldarov, Yorkshire Cup scorer Giavellotto and Group 1 winner Broome are also among the principal contenders.

The latest Goodwood Cup odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise Timeform’s guide to the runners as well as betting tips from the racing boffins can be found below.

Goodwood Cup tips

Timeform: COURAGE MON AMI has the potential to be one of the best stayers of recent years after winning the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on only his fourth career start. He had Coltrane and Emily Dickinson behind in second and fourth on that occasion and can confirm his superiority over that pair and stretch his unbeaten record to 5.

Goodwood Cup runners

Broome

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: William Buick Age: 7 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 2

Resumed winning ways in 15-runner Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan (2m) in March. Creditable 1½ lengths third of 6 in Yorkshire Cup at York (1¾m) next time and failed to stay 2½m when well behind some of these in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Moore on stablemate Emily Dickinson.

***

Coltrane

Trainer: Andrew Balding Jockey: Oisin Murphy Age: 6 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 11

Made a winning reappearance in the Sagaro at Ascot (2m) and better than ever when ¾-length second of 12 to Courage Mon Ami in Gold Cup at Royal Ascot (2½m, good to firm) since. Looks sure to give another good account.

****

Courage Mon Ami

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age: 4 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 5

Produced a remarkable performance for one so inexperienced when making it 4-4 in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot (2½m, good to firm) in June by ¾ length from the reopposing Coltrane. Could be capable of even better and can confirm his superiority over Andrew Balding’s charge.

*****

Eldar Eldarov

Trainer: Roger Varian Jockey: David Egan Age: 4 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 8

Last year’s St Leger winner. Ran very well when failing by only a ½ length to concede 5 lb to Giavellotto in the Yorkshire Cup on his return but not at his best when 10 lengths seventh to Courage Mon Ami in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Bounce back is needed.

***

Enemy

Trainer: Ian Williams Jockey: Richard Kingscote Age: 6 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 3

Smart gelding but ran poorly in the Henry II at Sandown when last seen in May and likely to find a few too strong even if back to his very best.

**

Giavellotto

Trainer: Marco Botti Jockey: Andrea Atzeni Age: 4 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 9

In receipt of 5 lb when proving ½ length too strong for Eldar Eldarov (Broome back in third) in the Yorkshire Cup at York (1¾m) in May. A bit more will be needed now stepping back up in trip.

***

Lone Eagle

Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Rossa Ryan Age: 5 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 10

Irish Derby runner-up in 2021. His career has been a little disappointing since but he was second in a 1¾m Chester Group 3 for his new yard in May and it’s likely that 2½m stretched his stamina in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Should be fine at 2m.

***

Ocean Wind

Trainer: Roger Teal Jockey: Jim Crowley Age: 7 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 7

Placed in Group 3 company in spring 2021. Shaped as if retaining plenty of ability when third in 2m Sandown listed race on last month’s return from an absence but surely biting off more than he can chew at this level.

**

Quickthorn

Trainer: Hughie Morrison Jockey: Tom Marquand Age: 6 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 4

Front-runner who was a 14-length winner of Lonsdale Cup at York last summer. That venue has brought out the best in him again this year, fourth in the Yorkshire Cup before resuming winning ways in 1¾m listed race in June.

***

Tashkhan

Trainer: Brian Ellison Jockey: James Doyle Age: 5 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 1

Winless since 2021 but he’s posted solid efforts to make the frame at listed/Group 3 level this term. A place is probably the best he can hope for here.

**

Emily Dickinson

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 4 Weight: 9st 8lbs Draw: 6

Smart filly. Creditable 4½ lengths fourth of 12 to Courage Mon Ami in Gold Cup at Royal Ascot (2½m, good to firm) and successful in 1¾m Curragh Cup since. Moore prefers her to Broome. Likely to go well.
