Horse Racing Tips: Your best bets at Goodwood on Tuesday

PP's top trader Frank Hickey and the Sporting Life's Fran Berry are in full agreement for the Lennox Stakes but differ for the Goodwood Cup.

Tuesday – Goodwood – 16:00 – Lennox Stakes

Frank Hickey – Audience

Kinross won this race two years ago and was just touched off by Sandrine last year. He’s an obvious starting point. He was third in the July Cup earlier this month and connections mightn’t want to run him again so soon afterwards. If he doesn’t run, this race is wide-open and there could be a bit of value in Audience for John Gosden.

An improving four-year-old who didn’t win anything in his three-year-old season but they gelded him and he easily won a handicap at Leicester off a mark of 99. That performance worked out really well because there are a few subsequent winners behind him.

He stepped up in grade for the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and was again very impressive in winning by two lengths. He just looks like the right horse that’s improving at the right time. I can see his current ante-post price being much shorter on the day.

Fran Berry – Audience

I was quite keen on Audience at his price as well. A lot depends at Goodwood on how the horses handle the track and how jockeys ride it! It can be an optical illusion as you come to turn into the straight – the finishing post seems a lot closer than it actually is.

Ryan Moore and Oisín Murphy are plenty experienced at the venue to know when to sit and when to go. Back in the day Richard Hughes was a master around there as he just use to wait and wait again as he knew some of his rivals would make their move too early.

Tuesday – Goodwood – 16:35 – Goodwood Cup

Fran Berry – Giavellotto

It’ll be interesting to see what Courage Mon Ami will do. I don’t know if he’ll run but if he doesn’t then Gregory’s price should shorten. The extra two furlongs will suit him very well. He had a slow start at Ascot but all Frankie Dettori wanted to do was to get him to lead the field and get rolling on him. The further he went, the more impressive he was.

I like Giavellotto too, although I’ve not seen him since winning at York. He’d be decent each-way value if he lines up.

Frank Hickey – Lone Eagle

Emily Dickinson is very ground dependent. She wants soft ground. If the ground is soft or heavy she’s very, very good but on faster ground she’s average. If the ground is soft or good they may look at running her but at the moment I’d say it’s unlikely she’ll even run.

Lone Eagle has a better chance than the ante-post prices indicate. If you watch the Ascot Gold Cup, he was unbelievably keen for the first half a mile, and then settles in second behind Subjectivist. He hit 4.5 on the exchanges in running but his BSP was around 30/1. He just emptied out over the last two furlongs, he just couldn’t stay that 2m 4f trip.

He’s going to drop back to two miles at Goodwood and has two wins from three at the track. A bit of juice in the ground would suit him. I’d invite anyone to watch a re-run of the Ascot Gold Cup and see if he’s that far off the market leaders. It’s not easy for the three-year-olds like Gregory, even with the weight-for-age allowance against their older and more experienced rivals.

Coltrane is rock solid but he’s no superstar.
