2.15 Pontefract – Tasever

A fair prize on offer for this competitive class five, extended mile event and if you go back through the form of several of these you could make a solid claim for the majority of the field. Old Mabre seems to have been around for much longer than his age suggests (6), this will be his 62nd career start, and connections will have welcomed the recent rains for their charge. Still, he is no more than fairly handicapped and both Tasever and Perfect Swiss are readily preferred.

The latter showed that his turn is just around the corner when run out of things in the final stride by Vaccine over the course and distance some nine days ago. But Tim Easterby’s charge narrowly gets the vote. The son of Tasleet remains a maiden after nine starts (placed on four occasions) but looks set to be better suited by at least some give in the ground here rather than the faster surface he has encountered on his last two starts when he has been unable to quicken. He also remains unexposed over this trip with give in the turf.

2.35 – Uttoxeter – Quid Pro Quo

Some fair ex-hurdlers on show here, the top rated being Old News off a mark of 143 in a discipline in which he was also the lightest raced, but is the most experienced over the larger obstacles, this being his 10th start with six placed efforts but no gold medal to date. But he is becoming very frustrating over fences, his last run being hugely disappointing when sent off a 2/1 favourite at Fontwell Park, but at no stage looking as though he would win.

The Bomber Liston has always been held in high regard by Nicky Henderson, but has simply not cut the mustard on track and comes here following a wind operation and a most in auspicious debut over fences when he belted his first obstacle and then deposited Nico on the Worcester turf at the second. But in a race with plenty of pace on, five of the runners like to race prominently, this could be set up for the bottom weight Quid Pro Quo to land his second chase on his 7th attempt. He went through the race really strongly when landing a lesser contest at Southwell off 111 and with Fergus Gillard once again in the saddle he may well be up to defying an 8lbs higher mark following a fair second over the course and distance last time out.

3.10 – Uttoxeter – Fidux

Of the three course winners in the line-up, top weight Ruthless Article is readily preferred to Hell Red and Landofsmiles after running Twig to a length over this course and distance. The Rebecca Curtis trained gelding has form figures of 212 here and still looks fairly treated off a rating of 135 with the brilliant Brian Hughes on board for good measure.

The 10-year-old should be the biggest danger to the selection Fidux who has put together a fair run of form on his last four outings, fourth in that aforementioned race behind Twig and now 6lbs better off for a 10 length beating by his rival here. I think that Tom Cannon possibly rode him a little bit too positively last time out and I fancy that there will little between the pair with a more restrained ride this afternoon.

5.10 – Pontefract – Yazaman

Soul Seeker won over this course and distance this time last year and has been knocking on the winning door again following five back to back placed efforts. However, I would much prefer to support him on a much faster surface even though he remains feasibly treated off top weight here. Glory Hellelujah has tumbled a long way down the weights and any support in the market place for the Nigel Tinkler trained runner would surely be significant.

Yazaman was rated as high as 85 this time last year, running in several class three handicaps, so he should be winning in this class. However, a record of one win from 32 starts hardly garners any confidence (placed in eight races). In the past six furlongs has just looked a shade too far for the bay gelding and a fast run five at a stiff course like the M62 track should play to his strengths. He once again caught the eye following a 62-day break when staying on steadily behind Impressor at Beverley and as long as he doesn’t fall out of the traps, the five-year-old has every chance of adding a belated second career win to his CV.
