Drying ground would bring Touchwood into the argument in the returning cheekpieces, while the application of a visor appears to have helped Beauty Choice who shouldn’t mind what the weather does. He looks a serious player, but preference is for IMPELLER (nap) who is 4lb higher than for his latest Carlisle success but just 1lb higher than when winning over this C&D last summer. After John, Lezardrieux and Madame Fenella are others to consider.
Neither Harry’s Halo nor Braveheart Boy enjoyed an ideal trip when second and third respectively at Chester 12 days ago and either would have to be feared if things pan out more kindly. MILE END has also not enjoyed much luck in her last two starts on the AW, but granted a smoother passage this dual soft-ground winner in Ireland is given another chance to show what she is capable of.
The last three runnings of this have gone to a newcomer and there are some interesting types having their first starts here, notably Approval, Musical Act and War Rooms. Market support for any of them should be noted, but USER AMISTOSO made an eyecatching debut when fourth at the Newmarket July meeting and any improvement on that would give him a solid chance.
Of the two previous winners St Leger-entry Shagpyle is given the edge over Lunar Bird, while Sea Theme is respected if building on her promising Salisbury debut. However, the two newcomers are both bred to be smart and although it would be no surprise to see Franberri make a winning debut, preference is for ALRASHAKA whose dam and three of her four winning siblings earned RPRs of 111 or higher.
Leap Year Lad is relatively exposed for a 3yo, but he seemed to improve for the stiffer test when winning at Haydock last time so may have a bit more to offer over this trip. GOLDEN MAVERICK is preferred, though, having won so convincingly at Epsom a week ago. He has a 6lb penalty to carry for that, but is still 1lb well in. Handicap newcomer Mathematician looks best of the rest.
The hat-trick seeking Lockdown Lass has to be respected in her current mood, especially if the ground remains on the soft side, while Le Reveur could be a threat to all if settling better than of late. The consistent pair Hostelry and Distinction should again run their races, though their respective profiles suggest they are more likely to place than win. A chance is taken with VICTORIA FALLS who should appreciate the return to a soft surface if conditions remain that way and has dropped back to her winning mark.
