14:10 – Turner Girl
TURNER GIRL seemed to have her stamina stretched when third over two miles at Ripon on her penultimate start and she duly proved suited by dropping back to a mile and three-quarters when runner-up at Catterick last month. Turner Girl, who was wearing first-time cheekpieces at Catterick, kept on well and was only denied by a head, so she can give a good account after edging up only 1 lb in the weights. She will also have the assistance of the promising Connor Planas in a contest restricted to apprentice riders.
14:45 – Consoling
CONSOLING offered something to work with when fourth in a six-furlong maiden here in May and showed the benefit of that experience when runner-up over the same trip at Carlisle last month. Consoling is bred to stay well and she shaped like a step up in trip would suit at Carlisle, where she did her best work at the finish, so she can raise her game now tackling seven furlongs for the first time.
15:15 – Slippin Jimmy
SLIPPIN JIMMY has been largely consistent since entering handicap company and he produced another creditable effort when runner-up at Haydock earlier this month, going down by just half a length. He has edged back up 1 lb for that effort but remains on a competitive mark and can gain reward for his consistency.
15:45 – Sidneys Son
SIDNEYS SON had an excuse when only fourth on his penultimate start (he raced closer than ideal to a strong pace) and he got back on track when runner-up in a six-furlong novice here last month. He was unable to get on terms with the winner but he stuck to his task well, so should be suited by stepping back up to seven furlongs here. He can put his experience to good use and get off the mark.
16:15 – Five Towns
FIVE TOWNS offered encouragement when fifth on her handicap debut at York in May and improved on that to finish runner-up at Haydock last month, despite leaving the impression that, when the pressure was applied, she found the ground a bit quick for her. Five Towns impressed with how fluently she travelled at Haydock and, despite going up 3lb for her latest effort, she still appeals as being on a fair mark, particularly with the potential of more to come. She is fitted with a tongue tie for the first time here.
CALCUTTA DREAM was suited by coming from off the pace in a well-run race at Yarmouth 11 days ago, though he still deserves credit for running up to his best, while Timeform’s pace forecast suggests he’ll also get a strong gallop to chase here. He’s able to run off the same mark as at Yarmouth, which is only 1lb above the mark he defied at Newcastle in January, and he can give a good account.
17:20 – Portoro
PORTORO didn’t show much in three starts in all-weather maidens/ novices but, without the hood, he produced a much-improved display when upped in trip on his handicap debut and first start on turf at Salisbury last week. Portoro drew right, approaching the final furlong and scored by nine lengths, proving a long way ahead of his opening mark. He has gone up 13lb but, still open to improvement, he appeals as the one to beat here against largely exposed types. He has joined Martin Dunne from John Butler.
