Cases can be made for several of these but top of the list is WAVERING DOWN, who was clear of the others when losing out only narrowly to one in a very determined mood at Uttoxeter last month. Second choice is Oceanline, who ran as though the outing was needed three weeks ago and has been given a good chance by the handicapper. Pink Eyed Pedro can also feature, while Dream Jet is the dark horse.
As competitive as ever and, as is usually the case, the pace should be honest. The forecast rain complicates matters as plenty of these have shown their best form on good ground. MYRISTICA seems to go on most surfaces and she’s coming along nicely over hurdles. Her Flat form is on par with second choice Dancila, who won on his handicap debut with sufficient authority to believe he can deal with this higher level of competition.
Several of these are in good form but FRANCKY DU BERLAIS (nap) is back on a workable mark and can win this race for the third year running. His stablemate Courtland is enjoying a revival this summer and may provide the biggest threat, although last year’s runner-up La Domaniale returns here after a career-best performance and is also respected. Chief Black Robe has been a revelation for his new stable in recent weeks and is next on the list, while And The New and Fix At All were first and second in the C&D trial for this race last month.
The Big Jetaway reverts to chasing after running well in two recent novice hurdles and probably still has untapped potential over fences but ROXBORO ROAD hinted at a possible return to form when shaping well at Cartmel three weeks ago and is taken to exploit his much-reduced handicap mark. Chess Player probably won’t be far away, while it will be interesting to see whether Laura Morgan can revitalise Due Reward.
The most obvious answer to this very ordinary novice is SOBEGRAND, who is not really bred to benefit from today’s step up in trip but comes here after a convincing 2m win at Stratford 18 days ago. The veteran Cheltenham De Vaige does not have a compelling record over hurdles but some of this year’s point/hunter chase form proves he retains a significant chunk of ability, and he might turn out to have been astutely placed for this first run since he rejoined Fergal O’Brien.
Nadim scored off today’s mark at Stratford on Sunday and will be a tough nut to crack if in similar form again but slight preference is for ADAMARIS, who came from off the pace to make a winning handicap debut over C&D a fortnight ago and, if his Flat form is a guide, could have more improvement to come over hurdles. Enthused and Beaumesnil also feature prominently in calculations.
