15:00 Curragh – Tarawa
Dermot Weld farmed the Minstrel Stakes with four winners in the first six editions from 1988, none other than the great Vincent O’Brien won the other two, and the lightly raced three-year-old Tarawa looks sure to relish the return to an easier surface following a one-paced second in the Celebration Stakes last time out.
If the daughter of Shamardal returns to the form of her previous run when a fast finishing fourth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas then she deserves to be the clear favourite here and see off the likes of Jumbly and the Circus Maximus Stakes heroine Honey Girl. The latter was a huge disappointment in the Duke of Cambridge at Royal Ascot but is another better suited by today’s conditions. However, everything conspired against her that day and she could well be worth a saver or forecast mixer with the selection here.
15:15 Redcar – Red Maids
The biggest factor this afternoon at all of the British racecourses is going to be the weather and the Cleveland track is expected to receive its fair share of rain through the weekend. Having gone through all the handicaps there aren’t many of the entries that would prefer a radical change in ground conditions, but this seven race maiden Red Maids looks as though she will benefit from some give when her action and previous runs on slow artificial surfaces are taken into account.
Her best run to date was a very strong staying on second, beaten a neck, behind Invested at Yarmouth off a mark of 70, and set to race off 67 here and with the services of Oisin Murphy to boot, the daughter of Invincible Spirit looks bound to play a major role here. Of her rivals, Vortigan showed his winning turn was just around the corner with a much improved placed effort at Haydock Park in the first time blinkers which are retained here.

15:30 Curragh – Savigny (each way)
After being badly drawn at Gowran Park in a maiden, Mr King, made amends in no uncertain style when landing a Roscommon handicap by half a length off a mark of 78. However, the winning margin didn’t tell the whole story that day as Gary Carroll only had to push his mount out to land the gold medal that day. Colin Keane’s charge looks a big player here off a 6lbs higher mark as does Dundalk maiden winner Take Heart.
However, at a much bigger price, Savigny looks an interesting each-way play here. On the back of a staying on effort over an extended nine furlongs at Gowran two outings back, Henry de Bromhead stepped his charge up to 13 furlongs at Leopardstown, but after looking dangerous two furlongs out he fell in a hole. A fast run and stiff 10 furlongs looks made to measure in a race where there appears to be plenty of pace on.
16:45 Redcar – Great Colaci
Veteran Irv looked set to resume winning ways when just headed in the final strides at Nottingham last time out. He was left out in front that day which is not his usual running style and I suspect he will revert to his normal hold up tactics here off what looks a very winnable mark of just 55. Charlie Johnston’s Dark Company has been running well without winning and would be another beneficiary of a fast pace as he seems to settle so much better in behind runners.
Great Colaci has just two wins from 29 starts (seven from 33 on the sand) and the selection is hardly prolific on grass, but if the track is hit by a deluge he is the one most likely to benefit as he is assured to get home over this trip following a win and several placed efforts over a mile and a half. His last victory came off a rating of 64 (placed off the same mark) so despite top weight and the fact that he is very much into the veteran period of his racing life, the 10-year-old looks sure to run well here off a rating of just 52 with able claimer Ryan Sexton on board.
