This looks a good opportunity for SOUTHWOLD to make a winning start on turf and go 3-5 in his career to date with his all weather (AW) form reading well. Tele Red wasn’t at his best at Newbury last time but is the sort to bounce back and can emerge as the chief threat ahead of He’s A Gentleman.
Haydock features significantly in the family history of WELSH HARBOUR, whose sire Cable Bay won the John of Gaunt and whose full sister King’s Lynn took both the Temple and Achilles Stakes. The clear pick of the debutantes, she’s preferred to Bint Havana Grey, whose solid Newbury debut third stands out among the form of those with experience.
Things are surely going to drop the way of Cold Stare (second choice) and Asadjumeirah again some day soon, but it may pay to forgive the far less exposed HOUR BY HOUR his Hamilton disappointment, having been given a bit of time since. Trip and ground are as much in his favour as for April’s Pontefract near-miss off slightly higher. Danzart is likely still in form and holds prospects also.
The down-in-grade top two make the most appeal. Ravenscraig Castle has come awfully close to supplementing previous sound-surface gains on soft ground the last twice and is not passed over lightly, but in PRINCE ALEX he faces a rival with proven winning credentials over 1m6f with cut, including here, and another useful 2lb drop to make use of. Turf debutant Quantum Leap is the potential joker in the pack, stiff-looking initial mark notwithstanding.
Utilis (second choice) has to be respected in this easier assignment than on the AW last time out but INCA QUEEN looks the part on paper and is an interesting alternative, especially if the market vibes are positive. Another newcomer Crown Dreams is also worth considering.
Ready preference is for Ralph Beckett’s handicap debutante NIGIRI (NAP) who looks very much the way to go on the back of her eye-catching Wolverhampton third with the promise of more to come. Plumette could emerge as the main danger now she is easing in the weights with Yarmouth scorer Streaky Bay and handicap newcomer Laura’s Breeze appealing as the pick of the rest for minor honours.
