The eight year old Rivas Rob Roy has been making hay at Brighton, where Darvel (second choice) won well last time. Slight preference, though, is for NEW HEIGHTS who won this race last year and has shown enough recently to be given a good shout if the first-time headgear has no adverse effect.
Both Aragon Castle and Rey De La Batalla can step forward from their debut efforts but Mission To Moon and INNER CITY set a fair standard and the Godolphin representative can get off the mark at the third time of asking.
Run of the race will be important but the two leading candidates may be METAHORSE, whose latest start suggested he may have turned a corner, and Ernie’s Valentine who stayed on so well from out the back over 7 furlongs two starts back. The style of Secret Strength’s Newbury win suggests he is capable of defying his step back up the weights but his longer-term record prompts doubts whether he will do so.
This looks a better race than the one in which Ectocross drew clear last week and he may have to give best to GOLDEN MAVERICK. Ian Williams’ 3yo has made good progress in handicaps this season and a 2lb rise for his recent Leicester success may not stop him.
The most solid options appear to be INVERINATE and H Key Lails who look set for big runs if their last three outings are anything to go by. Connections of Fayasel attempt to squeeze out a bit extra with first-time headgear, while Hawajes has had just three runs in total and one for his current connections, so he’s a handicap newcomer to be checked out.
Most arrive after positive recent performances and that includes last-time-out winners Red Royalist and Typical Woman, along with Windsor second Naasma who steps up from 1m2f. There’s only one with major potential, though, and that is the Prescott three year old SPRITZIN (NAP) who went so close when reappearing for her handicap debut at Pontefract last Tuesday. Night Eagle has a good record at this track.
