CAMPAIGN TRAIL has shown improved form this season after being gelded and entering handicaps, finishing runner-up on both starts, the latest over a mile and three quarters at Doncaster. He has been unlucky to bump into a couple of Sir Mark Prescott improvers on each occasion, pulling clear of the remainder last time. He should find this test easier and he may be hard to contain in this small field on what he has shown so far. Palio is also promising in his own right and will ensure the selection doesn’t have it all his own way.

VALLEY OF FLOWERS was well supported when resuming winning ways over a mile and a half at Beverley two starts back, doing well to win in the manner she did given she failed to settle in a steadily-run race. She was again well backed over the same course and distance 12 days ago, again taking a strong hold in a race which wasn’t truly run. Valley of Flowers now finds herself in a bigger field and this has the potential to be run at a proper gallop, so she is afforded another chance to prove herself still on a good mark. Chief Craftsman certainly wasn’t winning out of turn at Doncaster last time but he can go well again under a penalty.

WILLOLARUPI was in need of the experience on his debut at Musselburgh recently (he was also coltish beforehand) but he also showed plenty to work on, switched wide over a furlong out and doing all of his best work in the closing stages to finish never nearer than at the line. That experience shouldn’t be lost on him and, with progress anticipated, he looks the one to beat. Bay of Australia, who was second on debut at Ripon is feared, along with Bellarchi and Lieutenant Rascal.

    15:52 Oso Rapido

    OSO RAPIDO’s last win came in this race 12 months ago and he left the impression he was on his way back to form at York last time following some below-par efforts so far this season. He never looked like winning, but he was beaten just over four lengths in a big-field handicap which had more depth than this, so he ought to be competitive if building on that given he remains 7 lb below his last winning mark. Three-time course and distance winner Quercus and in-form Ecclesiastical appeal as the duo to give the selection most to do.

    16:22 Sparkle In His Eye

    SPARKLE IN HIS EYE managed to win four times in handicaps last season and he quickly dispelled a lesser effort at Thirsk when finishing runner-up at Musselburgh last month, a little short of room three furlongs out but still having every chance in the closing stages. He was the only one to challenge the winner that day and the third gave the form a boost by winning next time. Sparkle In His Eye is just 1 lb higher now and looks the percentage play. Last week’s course and distance scorer Obee Jo rates an obvious danger, while Diamond Vega retains potential as a lightly-raced filly from a good stable and could leave her reappearance behind.

    16:57 Dandy Spirit

    Returning to 0-65 company could be the catalyst for DANDY SPIRIT to resume winning ways. The six-year-old was a back-to-back winner at this level during the spring and he’s unlikely to be inconvenienced by dropping back to the minimum trip here. Next on the list is Albegone, who continues to edge down the weights and will surely capitalise on the handicapper’s mercy before long.
