14:07 – SHE’S A NOVELTY

SHE’S A NOVELTY won over hurdles for Fergal O’Brien in the summer of 2021 but had been off the course for the best part of two years when returning on the Flat at Nottingham last month. Backed at long odds, She’s A Novelty turned in a cracking effort, finishing well to be beaten three quarters of a length into second behind My Chiquita, who has won again since, and shaped as though retaining all her ability. Wisely given a bit of time to recover from that run, she makes plenty of appeal to register a first win on the Flat in this apprentice contest.

14:42 – MACANUDO

All the runners in this five-furlong novice for two-year-olds have run but Richard Hannon’s MACANUDO looks the one with the most scope for improvement and drops back in distance after showing plenty of speed over longer trips. He was fourth over seven furlongs on his debut at Haydock and while he was all the rage when beaten over six at Windsor last time, he still didn’t look the finished article and came up against a useful prospect in Shagraan who beat him three and three-quarter lengths. Loaded Gun and Desert Master are the form picks but both might want a bit further now.

15:17 – FIRST OF MAY

FIRST OF MAY could hardly have created a better first impression in handicaps for James Fanshawe when making a winning return and she could well be the type to run up a sequence. The winner of a novice at Newcastle on her final start at two, she improved again on her reappearance in May when an impressive winner of a fillies’ contest at Wolverhampton, cruising clear to beat Beau Roc by two and a half lengths. Winter Crown took a step forward when scoring at Nottingham and is next best ahead of Seantrabh, who was better than the bare result here in May.

15:52 – BANDERAS

It has reached that stage of the season where unexposed three-year-olds often have an edge against older opposition, so BANDERAS is selected to make a winning handicap debut at the expense of Torre Del Oro. Banderas ran the now useful Klondike to a head in a valuable maiden at Newbury in the spring before going one better in a similar event here in May, and shapes as though he’ll be suited by going another couple of furlongs here. Percy Jones and Cumberland Plate winner Two Brothers may fare best of the older brigade.

16:27 – HOLGUIN

HOLGUIN arrives on the back of some solid runs for Andrew Balding this season and could be the way to go in this listed contest from a handy inside stall. He’s already been runner-up in similar races at Haydock and Epsom and didn’t have the best of draws in the Jersey Stakes last time. Fellow three-year-old He’s A Monster probably failed to handle Epsom when well held on his previous attempt in this company but bounced straight back with a good win in a handicap at Sandown, so he’s second choice ahead of Brad The Brief who might come on for his reappearance.

17:00 – BUSHFIRE

Gemma Tutty’s BUSHFIRE at the foot of the weights is on a good mark judged on last year’s efforts and might be worth siding with to build on a more encouraging run last time. He was placed twice on the all-weather late last year soon after joining the yard and ran much his best race this term when fourth to Just Hiss in an amateurs’ contest at Newcastle last time. The thriving Sid’s Annie, who is seeking a hat-trick, Innse Gall and Compliant head the dangers in an open finale.
