TOWER OF LONDON, a son of Galileo, was an impressive winner of a premier handicap at Down Royal winning by four and a 1/2 lengths. He is entered in this year’s St Ledger Stakes. He is also entered at the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York and looks a progressive type. He gets the nod here to get this three-day meeting off to a flyer for the Aidan O’Brien team.
Land Legend is definitely of interest as he was so unlucky in the King George V handicap at the Royal Ascot meeting when finishing seventh. This is a step up to Group 3 class but if it was a handicap he would definitely be the pick. One to watch for the future.
There is lots of Royal Ascot form on display here and it’s a simple case of trying to work out which ones will come forward from that meeting last month. I like MALC from the Richard Fahy team. I thought that was a very good run when finishing second in the Norfolk Stakes to shock 150-1 winner Valiant Force. Thunder Blue is another who is backing up quickly from the same race and ran well to be fifth that day to Valiant Force, who share the same ownership. He looks the type to run well at a nice each-way price.
The Jeff Smith-owned DESERT COP sees Harry Davies taking 3lbs off the top weight and that should help as he’s dropping to handicap company now. He finished second to Shaquille in the Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury and that form reads very well as the winner won the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup and is favourite for Saturday’s Group 1 July Cup at this meeting. Desert Cop went to Royal Ascot and finished sixth to Bradsell in the Group 1 Kings Stand Stakes.
I’m taking on the former Derby winner Adayar as I was very disappointed with him at Royal Ascot and that is a little concerning. He is better than these on form and the figures show he should be winning off an officail rating of 121 but I am not convinced. I’m willing to take a chance on the John and Thady Gosden-trained Israr who ran very well behind Quickthorn at York recently. Despite being rated 10lb less (111) than Adayar and having to run off level weights against that rival, he’s my pick.
