ANNAF produced his best effort on turf when finishing third in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, showing smart form to pass the post less than three lengths behind the winner. He is down markedly in grade today and a repeat of his Ascot form will give him every chance of regaining the winning thread, albeit his draw in stall 11 is far from ideal.
PEROTTO failed to meet expectations in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot last time, but it could be worth putting a line through that run as he wasn’t seen to best effect, weakening late on after making his effort earlier than ideal. He is 2 lb lower in the weights today and could be worth another chance to confirm the promise of his stable debut now fitted with a hood for the first time.
MAGICAL SUNSET shaped much better than the bare result in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot last time, faring best of the group who raced on the far side of the track. Still totally unexposed at a mile, she is likely to have a bigger effort in the locker when everything falls right and today could well be the day in a listed heat where several of her rivals look out of their depth.
EMILY UPJOHN looked a much-improved filly after eight months off when easily winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom last time. The most striking aspect of her performance was the manner in which she quickened to lead over two furlongs out, just needing to be kept up to her work from there to see off last year’s Irish Derby winner Westover. That form comfortably sets the standard here and Emily Upjohn is fancied to take the drop back in trip in her stride to see off Paddington.
MUSTAZEED has made good progress to win his last two starts at Newbury, running to a useful level with the promise of more to come. After all, it’s still early days with the Harry Eustace stable and the manner of his victory last time suggests a further 5 lb rise in the weights is unlikely to be enough to prevent him from completing the hat-trick in these deeper waters.
MERLIN THE WIZARD took another step forward when making a successful handicap debut at Ffos Las a couple of weeks ago, easily following up his novice victory at Kempton the time before. He seems to be going from strength to strength and his scope for further progress identifies him as one to keep on the right side now up 6 lb in his hat-trick bid.
ORCHESTRA has continued to give a good account since gaining his latest win at Beverley in May, certainly showing enough to suggest he remains on a workable mark. The application of a visor for the first time today could eke out a bit more improvement and the booking of champion jockey William Buick also catches the eye in a wide-open finale.
