14:45 – Chelmsford – Kodi Noir
Just like the finale at Ayr (see below) this class six handicap looks very winnable and although the likes of No News and the penalised top weight Eastern Charm will be quite popular, I am going to take a chance on the Alice Haynes-trained runner KODI NOIR.
There have been more than several occasions during his brief career that this son of Kessaar has looked as though a trip beyond six furlongs would suit and he even looked one paced over seven furlongs last time out at Lingfield Park when he was badly positioned off a very slow pace at the Surrey track, eventually finishing a never nearer four and a half lengths off the winner.
The filly Coloane has been knocking on the door of late and will be best served by a fast run race in order to lose her maiden tag at the 10th time of asking, but in a moderate event.
15:20 – Chelmsford – Toimy Son
The main betting race on the card at the Essex track is an ultra competitive class three, seven furlong handicap at 15.20 in which the top weight can cause a minor upset off a playable mark.
Winner of a Listed race at Longchamp last year and previously a close up eighth in the Prix Morny as a two-year-old, TOIMY SON has been dropped 12lbs since the beginning of the season and may be able to give the weight away to the likes of Open Mind and course and distance winner Sir Oliver.
The former could never get to grips with course specialist Justanotherbottle at Ripon and this step up to seven furlongs should be in his favour. Of the other entries, New Definition both ran too freely and needed the run on his first run back at Sandown and looks dangerous off a handicap mark of 95 under Neil Callan.

16:50 – Ayr – Power Of Gold
All eyes will probably be on Sparks Fly as this fantastically in-form filly tries to complete a six timer in this feature mile, class three handicap of the day. In a quite remarkable run, the daughter of Muhaarar has gone from winning off a lowly mark of just 59 to landing a class three fillies handicap at Chester last time out off 84. Set to race off 90 here I have a feeling that this winning run will come to an end at the hands of her fellow three-year-old, POWER OF GOLD.
Hugo Palmer’s charge is also firmly on the upgrade following a comfortable length success over Razoni at Doncaster when he merely had to be nudged out in the closing stages for a comfortable length success over Razoni.
I have little doubt that a mile and a quarter will suit the selection in time as he strengthens up, but with plenty of rain in the air he should get the relative test of stamina he needs at this trip and he can take care of the filly and Shahbaz.
17:25 – Ayr – Rory The Cat
This looks one of the poorest handicaps at class six level that I have seen for a long time with the majority of these finding it hard to be placed let alone win and the percentage call has to be the Lucinda Russsell trained charge, RORY THE CAT.
His 13 rivals have only managed seven wins between then in 181 runs and shown precious little this season.
In contrast, the selection opened his career account at the 11th time of asking when just getting up in the final 50 yards at Beverley off a mark of 52. I have upgraded that success as he raced wide for the majority of the 10 furlong journey and a 4lbs penalty looks a perfectly playable upgrade in such a poor race.
