CLARENDON HOUSE won a conditions event at Beverley last season, and was highly tried afterwards, beaten just two lengths in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. He shaped well on his first two starts back in handicap company this season, only narrowly beaten in the Dash at Epsom, and he pulled too hard in a listed event at Haydock last time. He is probably worth forgiving that effort and, on the pick of his form, should go close here if a first-time tongue tie has a positive effect. Korker was back to his smart best when second at Newcastle last week so rates a big threat.
BORN TO ROCK’s sales price rocketed to 110,000 guineas at the breeze-ups earlier this year and she looked well above average when making a winning debut at Yarmouth in May, displaying a smart turn of foot and still scoring by four and a quarter lengths despite being eased near the finish.
Those in behind are yet to do anything for the form, but she recorded an excellent timefigure on that occasion which gives her visual display substance, and she sets a very good standard now moving into listed company, while there should also be plenty more to come. Nazalan had clearly learnt plenty from his debut when making all over course and distance last month and, with that form proving strong, he’s feared most.
It’s tough to look beyond YIBIR, who was unable get competitive in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot just over a fortnight ago, but back in much calmer waters, Charlie Appleby’s five-year-old should prove tough to beat back down in trip in what doesn’t look an overly strong race for the grade. Ocean Wind has a lengthy absence to overcome, but he put up a few smart performances in defeat back in 2021, and he could give the selection most to think about sporting first-time blinkers.
The ones with experience don’t set the bar too high but there are several well-bred newcomers on show representing powerful connections. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained STARLORE makes plenty of appeal on paper, related to several winners, including smart Flavius, and he is put forward before the benefit of market clues. Charlie Appleby won this race 12 months ago and Arabian Crown, who cost €600,000 as a yearling, is another who is bred to go a bit and shouldn’t be underestimated.
All five of these contested the Wolferton at Royal Ascot though only SAGA gave his running. He was an unlucky loser at the Royal meeting last year and also shaped very well on his return, so while he is a quirky sort who isn’t the easiest to win with, he gets a marginal vote kept to this trip which he remains relatively unexposed at. With no obvious pace on, Poker Face may resume forward tactics and he’s feared most in a race where it is hard to be confident on the end result.
MISS CYNTHIA remains a maiden, but she showed her best form yet stepped up to this trip when runner-up at Yarmouth last month, flattered by how close she finished to the easy winner who wasn’t extended at the line, but she still pulled clear of the remainder. She is able to race from the same mark now and it is hard to think that she hasn’t got even more to offer at this sort of trip, while she could hardly be in better hands. Recent course and distance winner Lionella is a big danger and Seahouses looks an interesting handicap debutant.
Though winless following 14 attempts, BRILLIANT BLUE is of strong interest back at a mile. Indeed, the four-year-old shaped well on his first two starts of the season prior to appearing to run out of petrol in the closing stages upped to a mile and a quarter at Lingfield last time, so he makes most appeal from 1 lb lower. Goldsmith merits respect for all that he’s yet to shine on turf, while Roman Dynasty would obviously be a huge player if he were to line up for this (due to run at Yarmouth Thursday).
