An open handicap where a tentative vote goes in the favour of SWEET FANTASY, who is a largely consistent sort who has quickly fallen back down to his last winning mark. She left the impression that she would come on for her first start for five months at Chelmsford a fortnight ago, given a patient ride and never a threat after making brief inroads around a furlong out. Sweet Fantasy finds herself in an easier grade of handicap now and that run should have put an edge on her. Typical Woman and Candy Shack are a couple of potential threats.
STONE CIRCLE had fallen to an attractive mark and found his form again last season, winning three times, and he narrowly came out on top on his return from six months off in heavy ground at Yarmouth in April. He lost his way again afterwards, but returned to form when runner-up at Salisbury last week, a little awkward leaving the stalls but moving into the race nicely and doing all of his best work at the finish. The winner that day had the run of the race and, if Stone Circle turns up in similar form, he seems sure to be in the mix again. Refuge and Leodis Dream head the dangers.
The ones with experience don’t set an exacting standard in this maiden, so the newcomers are taken to come to the fore, with the William Haggas-trained SUMMIT making most appeal. She cost 320,000 guineas as a yearling and is a sister to this year’s Craven Stakes winner Indestructible, who won over six furlongs as a juvenile. The market will likely reveal more but she is bred to be a little sharper than Wild Goddess, another well-bred filly who represents powerful connections that know how to ready one.
SIGNIFICANTLY was rated as high as 104 in his pomp for Karl Burke and he also won a handicap at Royal Ascot. However, he lost his way last season, tumbling down the weights as a result, though he took a step back in the right direction on his first start for new connections when hitting the frame at Ayr in May. That race wasn’t run at a strong gallop, resulting in a bunched finish, and Significantly is just the type to go on from that effort representing a yard that do well with such types, while the addition of first-time cheekpieces may sharpen him up further. Gis A Sub was below his best at York but is another potentially well treated if things click again and is one to monitor.
HIDDEN PASS’s sales price rocketed to €400,000 at the breeze-ups earlier this year and he is bred to be smart, too, so he may be worth chancing making his debut in a race where the bar isn’t set too high. Charlie Appleby knows how to get one ready and he may have a bit too much for Juantorena, who showed plenty on his debut at Newbury and represents a yard whose newcomers invariably improve a fair bit for their debut experience.
A few of these arrive with a question mark against them so this looks a good opportunity for SLIPPIN JIMMY to resume winning ways on the back of a good fourth at Ayr achieved off a 1 lb higher mark. Dee See Are could emerge as the chief threat now she is falling in the weights with handicap debutant Where’s Freddy another who needs factoring in with improvement on the cards.
