SHARP POWER has shown all of his best form so far on an artificial surface, coming in for sustained support in a seven-furlong handicap at Lingfield 10 days ago and shaping well in defeat. He pulled too hard on that occasion, but made good headway out wide and ran on all too late in the day. Sharp Power would have benefited from a stronger gallop that day and this return to six furlongs should suit, while his sole start on turf came in a much more competitive handicap than this at Goodwood and he wasn’t disgraced. Mighty Gurkha ended his losing run in impressive fashion at Leicester a fortnight ago so is the obvious threat.
REMINDER is from a good family but wasn’t seen to best effect under a considerate ride on her debut at Wolverhampton in May, hampered and losing her position after a furlong and not given a hard time after. She showed the benefit of that experience when opening her account over course and distance last month, racing prominently and finding plenty in the closing stages. There should be even more to come from her and is expected to defy a penalty with William Buick retaining the ride. Lady Dreamer, who finished runner-up to the selection last time, can pose the biggest threat on revised terms.
Archie Watson has his team in good order and FLYING KISS showed plenty to work on when finishing third on her debut at Chelmsford in January. She hasn’t been seen since, which is a slight concern, but she represents a yard that can get them ready after a break, and the form of that race has worked out alright. She sets the standard on form with the prospect of even more to come so looks the one to be with in what doesn’t look a deep race. Tephi had plenty of chances last year but her form puts her right there on her return to action, while Never This Way is another likely to be on the premises.
This is a strong race for the grade but MR FREEDOM has looked a horse well ahead of his mark returned to the Flat recently, winning at Lingfield and over course and distance with a bit up his sleeve. He did it nicely last time, produced to lead entering the final furlong and only having to be pushed out to seal the deal. The handicapper has raised him another 6 lb and he is now in a better race, but the way he travelled last time suggests that won’t be a problem, and he remains a horse to keep on the right side. My Chiquita, who is chasing a hat-trick, and In The Breeze, who overcame a pace bias to defy a reduced mark at Haydock last time, are others to consider.
Naasma will no doubt be popular after her breakthrough success at Lingfield recently, but she may have to play second fiddle to CARP KID, who has dropped to a handy mark based on the pick of his form – he is now 4 lb below his last winning mark – and with Billy Loughnane on board for the first time, taking off an invaluable 3 lb, John Flint’s eight-year-old can notch a third course success. English Spirit and recent dual course and distance winner Mr Zee can battle it out third spot.
KIMNKATE has thrived since being fitted with blinkers, making it back-to-back wins with a wide-margin success at Chepstow six days ago, and she can score again in her current form turned out quickly under a 6 lb penalty. Congruent ran her best race when third at Yarmouth last time and could be the biggest threat to the selection, ahead of Lady Marie.
