Saturday sees action on ITV coming from HQ in Newmarket, but the biggest race of the day is from Newcastle on the all-weather where we have the Northumberland Plate.
We will kick off at Newmarket.
12.20 – Newcastle – Magical Spirit
Gordon Elliott sent Coachella to Dubai, where he managed to bag a Listed race over six furlongs, staying on really well, and this looks a good fit for him. He was disappointing when last seen in the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh, which is a worry so I have gone for MAGICAL SPIRIT who ran a blinder against Bielsa at York and this course and distance winner has form at this track which helps.
12.40 Newmarket – Star of Mystery
STAR OF MYSTERY was the winner at Haydock over 6f by 11 lengths which takes some doing. She’s a smart filly with a good pedigree with multiple winners among her siblings. It didn’t happen for Godolphin at Royal Ascot, so they will be keen to make up for lost time.
12.55 Newcastle – Spycatcher
Karl Burke has never hidden the high regard he holds SPYCATCHER in woh put in a good run last time out on slow ground at Ascot. He disappointed in this contest last year but has run well here in the past.
13.15 – Newmarket – Al Aasy
William Haggis had a good Royal Ascot and his AL AASY has kept good company and has to be respected as they have kept him in training and he won his only start last season. He got beaten by a neck by Pyledriver in the Coronation Cup two years ago and that is top drawer form.

13.30 – Newcastle – Appier
APPIER won at this track in May and is 10lbs higher now but may not be finished improving. Connections will be disappointed he didn’t make it into the Northumberland Plate but could be a player next year. They’ll take this consolation race for now though.
13.50 – Newmarket – Aldaary
ALDAARY won his last three races on varying types of ground. He is very much on the up and I have to be with him. The obvious concern is the 420-day layoff. The trainer is pretty good at getting them back from layoffs though. The form horse is Berkshire Shadow after a very good run at Royal Ascot in the Queen Anne Stakes.
14.05 – Newcastle – Adjuvant
Calling the Wind ran a hell of a race for us with Billy Loughnane in the saddle last week at Royal Ascot and runs off the same mark again. However, Loughnane rides ADJUVANT now for Michael Bell and that’s significant. He’s my pick on the back of that and was a winner last time out at Newmarket.
The only concern is his lack of form on the artificial surfaces but he doesn’t have any bad form on it! Trainer Michael Bell will have worked him on the surface and given his profile he gets the nod.
