HEED THE CALL was out of her depth in a listed contest at Deauville last time, but she is worth a chance to resume her progress now back in calmer waters. A big improver when opening her account at the second attempt at Kempton last month, she is very much the one to beat on that form despite having a penalty to carry, while the application of cheekpieces for the first time could also eke out a bit more improvement.
NOTRE MAISON made every yard of the running to finally get off the mark at Brighton a couple of weeks ago, always doing enough in first-time cheekpieces to win by a length and three-quarters in comfortable fashion. Unlike several of her rivals, she clearly arrives here in a really good nick and just a repeat of the form she showed last time ought to put her right in the mix once again.
BEYOND EQUAL ran a typical race when finishing seventh on his latest outing at Windsor, not seeing things out having pulled too hard. He was still beaten only three and a quarter lengths, though, and the application of both cheekpieces and a hood today might help him to settle. He is also down in grade and could be worth siding with from a much-reduced mark, now 12lb lower in the weights than when gaining his last win in November 2021.
DENIS ANTHONY proved at least as good as everwhen filling the runner-up spot at Yarmouth earlier this month, bumping into a big improver for the second start in a row. The horse who beat him by three lengths last time has won again since, so that appeals as a solid piece of him. Denis Anthony is 2lb higher in the weights today, but he remains one to be interested in for James Fanshawe, who has his team in good heart (77% of horses running to form).
MERLIN THE WIZARD confirmed previous promise as he got off the mark at the third attempt at Kempton last time, travelling well at the head of affairs and showing a good turn of foot entering the final furlong to go clear. Admittedly, he only won by a neck having been closed down late on, but there was certainly plenty to like about that run ahead of today’s handicap debut. He retains lots of potential and an opening BHA mark of 83 is unlikely to prove beyond him.
SYMPATHISE has made good progress since joining Victor Dartnall to win her last two starts, first shedding her maiden tag at Wolverhampton in April and then defying a 2lb higher mark to follow up at Chepstow a few weeks ago. She was well on top at the finish on the last occasion, just needing to be pushed out to win by two lengths. Still low mileage for a five-year-old, she seems to be going from strength to strength for her new yard and a further 5lb rise in the weights might not be enough to prevent her from completing the hat-trick.
LUSAKA took advantage of a drop in the weights to finally open his account at Chepstow last time, dictating a modest gallop and gradually drawing clear from two furlongs out to win by six and a half lengths. That was a very weak race, but this isn’t much tougher and it looks a decent opportunity for him to follow up from a 3lb higher mark if holding his form together.
