This could be quite an informative maiden and includes some interesting newcomers, particularly Beyond Borders and Elemental Eye. Market support for either should be heeded, but JEHANGEER sets a good standard based on his second over same course and distance (C&D) last month, with the winner going so close in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday,
Kuwait City passed the whole field to win a York handicap five weeks ago and the manner of that performance offered hope he could deal with his revised mark. There is pace on show here but they’re still unlikely to go as hard as they did at York and he may prove vulnerable. Showalong and Be Proud (second choice) have fair claims but STRONG JOHNSON ran his best race for new connections at Catterick two weeks ago and he can exploit his reduced mark here.
Plenty to ponder, not least whether Caesars Pearl can supplement her deserved Pontefract success at a trip perhaps still further than her optimum, and whether a fourth start in 23 days proves one too many for the admittedly thriving B Associates (second best). Should both be unable to answer these questions adequately, RUN CMC may be best placed to profit, given a return to his best at Wetherby last time over a trip at which he’s still likely to have more to offer.
As he is coming into this in such hot form, Kihavah has to be given the utmost respect in his bid for the four-timer, while Scampi is another for the shortlist following his unfortunate Epsom experience. Market support for the well-handicapped Haliphon would be interesting, but it may be worth taking a chance with DARK JEDI. Tim Easterby’s gelding didn’t show much in the race won by Scampi at York last month, but he didn’t shine in his previous start before going on to win this race last year.
Nymphadora can be given a chance having won at this level as a 2yo and returned to winning form last time, but this may be between Royal Aclaim and TREASURE TROVE (NAP). The former remains unexposed for a 4yo and she probably ran better than it looked in the Temple Stakes on her return, but preference is for the Irish challenger who has been successful in an even higher grade and made a fine comeback when third at Cork.
One Last Hug has been in fine form here since last month, winning twice and finishing a close second, and seems likely to go well again for last year’s winning stable. Newyorkstateofmind and Summer Sands are others to consider, but NOVAK is taken to complete the hat-trick and make it 3-3 under William Pyle. He remains unexposed as a sprinter. Wrecked It Ralph looks the pick of those at likely longer odds.
Few of these are solid. Bonito Cavalo makes the shortlist as he comes into this in better form than most, while Jkr Cobbler should go close judged on his narrow defeat in a handicap over C&D last time. However, it may be worth siding with SAMS CALL who has mainly been running well this year and his pedigree suggests he shouldn’t have any trouble staying the extra furlong.
