The final day of Royal Ascot 2023 gets under way here with the Listed Chesham Stakes for juveniles over seven furlongs. I’ll be hoping Ryan Moore is on the wrong Aidan O’Brien runner here as it’s CONTENT for me with Wayne Lordan on board. The son of Galileo wasn’t strong in the market at 5-1 on debut but ran on really strongly in third in a small field and there might be much more to come. I like the proven stamina on this trip and will have a few quid on each-way.
Group 3 company now for the Jersey Stakes for three-year-olds over seven furlongs. HOLLOWAY BOY is a right character but of course startled everyone with a 40-1 success at this fixture last year at Chesham. After that he ran well in defeat behind Marbaan at Goodwood and Auguste Rodin at Doncaster while showing a desire to wobble at angles in the closing stages. He blew out in the 2000 Guineas but has not been on fast ground since his Ascot victory and it might be that’s what he loves. I’ll have a few quid on each-way.
The feature of the day in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs. This is a huge chance for the Australians with ARTORIUS under the brilliant James McDonald for the Freedman brothers. Artorius is not world class, but he’s very good and was third in a huge field for this twelve months ago behind Naval Crown. He’s changed his running style from being a deep closer to sitting nearer the pace and provided he gets a little cover he should stay on very well.
This is the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes over a mile and a half. Hukum is the one to beat but I’m happy to back DEAUVILLE LEGEND each-way here for Danny Muscutt and James Ferguson. My selection stays this trip very well and will be ridden off the pace so is one to pick up pieces. His fourth in the Melbourne Cup was a great run after landing the Great Voltigeur at York. If ready on debut he’ll be hard to keep out the frame and ran really well when second in the King George V Stakes at this course.
The Wokingham Handicap over six furlongs. So hard! FRESH will surely be primed for a big run again at this track for James Fanshawe and Danny Tudhope. Most of you will know Fresh loves this course and and he landed the International here in 2022. Was second in the 2021 Wokingham. If on his best form he’s handicapped to hit the frame. I’m on him each-way.
The Golden Gates Stakes for three-year-olds rated 0-105 over a mile and a quarter. KNOCKBREX is interesting here for Frankie Dettori and Charlie Johnston. The lightly raced son of Ulysses has been running over a bit further and looked as though he would love this trip when weakening at York last time. I suspect he’ll run a big one.
Finally the Queen Alexandra Stakes over an extended two miles and five furlongs. Stratum will be all the rage but it’s the Cesarewitch hero RUN FOR OSCAR I want to be on for Charles Byrnes and Jim Crowley. This is much tougher than scoring at Newmarket off a mark of 90 but he’s a classy hurdler and stays really well.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
