Horse Racing Tips: Paddy Power’s epic Royal Ascot Cheat Sheet for Day 4

It's Day 4 at Royal Ascot and Paddy's pundits have their best picks on a monster seven-race card on ITV.

This is no normal Friday, this is a Royal Ascot 2023 day four Friday!

And, to celebrate, Paddy’s epic Cheat Sheet is back once again with a barrage of best bets for each and every race to hopefully helps us kick off the weekend in style.

The Albany Stakes at 2:30pm gets things rolling with Carlas Way and Soprano set to duke it out according to betting, while the Group 1 Coronation Stakes features on Friday afternoon at 4:20pm where Tahiyra for Dermot Weld is an odds-on fancy for punters from Meditate and Queen For You.

And there’s five other cracking races to try your luck on if they don’t suit you. But who should you be backing?

Well we have Ruby Walsh, Mick Fitzgerald, Matt Chapman, Jason Weaver and Timeform to (hopefully) answer just that question on the penultimate day of racing action at this year’s Ascot Festival.

So scroll down for their picks in our handy interactive cheat sheet and you could make that Friday feeling a little bit more special at Royal Ascot…

Ruby Walsh

I’m siding with MATRIKA. I liked what she did at the Curragh, she had an ear pricked and she showed a good turn of foot. She will have improved for that win too.

Mick Fitzgerald

PORTA FORTUNA, the daughter of Caravaggio, won a Group 3 at Naas last time, travelling sweetly through the race and then clinging on a little towards the line. Frankie Dettori is booked.

Jason Weaver

PERSIAN DREAMER looked really good on her racecourse debut and went off a very short price up at York last time but seemed unable to handle the rattling ground on that flat Bowling Green track.

Matt Chapman

PERSIAN DREAMER looked special on debut at Newmarket but then fluffed her lines at York, missing the start and struggling to get on terms with the leaders. I’ll forgive that performance and hope she can thrust home.

Timeform

CARLA’S WAY created an excellent impression when justifying favouritism on her Doncaster debut and, with the runner-up going on to frank the form in a big way, she makes plenty of appeal now stepping up in grade.

Ruby Walsh

The way the race should pan out will likely see LITTLE BIG BEAR win but I’m also keen on SHOULDVEBEENARING each way. He was second to the fav and is a huge price.

Mick Fitzgerald

LITTLE BIG BEAR roared back to form at Haydock on fast ground winning the Sandy Lane stakes last month. He was strong that day after disappointing in the 2000 Guineas. SHAQUILLE’s a player each-way.

Jason Weaver

LITTLE BIG BEAR was an absolute rocket last season and proved his poor run in 2000 Guineas all wrong with a dominant display at Haydock. The way he quickened on that occasion puts him right in the top drawer.

Matt Chapman

I fully expect a blasting performance here from LITTLE BIG BEAR who blew out in the 2000 Guineas like Auguste Rodin. Other than that he’s looked an absolute machine.

Timeform

The outstanding juvenile of 2022, LITTLE BIG BEAR returned lame in the 2000 Guineas but he was expertly prepared to land the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock and he’s a high-class sprinter who will take all the beating.

Mick Fitzgerald

Ryan Moore has been booked to ride OKITA SOUSHI and that is a statement in itself. Came from a fair way back to place in the Copper Horse Handicap at the 2022 meeting and he is even rated slightly lower this time around.

Jason Weaver

AIMERIC travelled very smoothly in his win at Doncaster last time and has only been nudged up the 4lbs for that effort. He’s a great ride for James Doyle.

Matt Chapman

AJERO might be desperate for fast ground and hasn’t had it since finishing second in this race in 2022 and going on to score at Goodwood. Will be dropped out by Jim Crowley and hopefully will rattle home.

Timeform

TEUMESSIAS FOX has been much improved this season and, having had something to spare when scoring at Newmarket last time, he makes plenty of appeal with further progress on the cards.

Ruby Walsh

There’s no such thing as an easy Group 1 but TAHIYRA is the best filly. I fancied her even with Mawj in so I’m all over her now the Godolphin runner is out.

Mick Fitzgerald

The Dermot Weld trained TAHIYRA is unlucky to not still have her unbeaten record. It was a tough task going into the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on soft ground but she only lost out by a neck.

Jason Weaver

Obviously Tahiyra is going to be terribly tough to beat. But, given that she’s a low-mileage improver, I can see REMARQUEE taking a significant step forward today.

Matt Chapman

The most likely winner is TAHIYRA. She ran a great race in the 1000 Guineas and showed her class when taking the Irish 1000. Meditate’s fancied to hit the frame.

Timeform

TAHIYRA is the class act here and likely has an even bigger performance in her so she’s very hard to get away from.

Ruby Walsh

I like John Murtagh’s filly CLOUNMACON who ran well at the Curragh last time out when finishing second and that form has held up. She’s a huge price too.

Mick Fitzgerald

Interesting that Aidan O’Brien has gone down the handicap route with JACKIE OH. Her Navan conqueror, Village Voice, runs in the Ribblesdale so it gives you an idea of the quality you’re dealing with.

Jason Weaver

EXIMIOUS made a pleasing start to her campaign a fortnight ago when trying to give away a good chunk of weight over 7f at Newbury. Stepping up over the stamina-sapping mile here will see improvement.

Matt Chapman

UNLESS will be a huge price here and could well have an each-way squeak. I like the fact the daughter of Justify has run in huge fields on her last two starts and travelled strongly when scoring at Naas.

Timeform

MARKSMAN QUEEN is taken to build on an encouraging first effort in handicap company and prove just too strong for stablemate Coppice, who didn’t fire when favourite for a Guineas Trial in the spring.

Ruby Walsh

KING OF STEEL ran a really solid race at Epsom last time out. Kevin Stott gave him a great ride then and he can do the same again. The form has held up as well.

Mick Fitzgerald

KING OF STEEL put in a hell of a run in the Epsom Derby, losing out by only half a length with such little experience under his belt. That sets a good standard.

Jason Weaver

KING OF STEEL put up a tremendous performance in The Derby at Epsom and, granted he’s bounced out of that okay, he can use this as a bit of a lap of honour.

Matt Chapman

Most of these would want soft ground and it’s impossible to oppose Derby runner-up KING OF STEEL who really should be long odds on if you take his Derby second at face value behind Auguste Rodin.

Timeform

KING OF STEEL ran a stunning race in the Derby on his comeback on what was just his third start, before being caught by Auguste Rodin. He could have an even bigger effort in him and will be hard to beat.

Ruby Walsh

I’m siding with PILLOW TALK for Karl Burke. He’s very fast and the track will suit him. He’s got every chance in the last.

Mick Fitzgerald

MICHAELA’S BOY showed a lot of speed at York. I think with that run under his belt he’s a decent each-way play in this contest where it’s all about finishing strong.

Jason Weaver

PRINCE OF PILLO is surely better than his return effort at Haydock where he was heavily punted but never really got into it. That was against his elders and, dropping into his own age, can outrun his odds.

Matt Chapman

I’ll chance HARRY BROWN each-way here for Hayley Turner and Dave Simcock. I like this horse has lots of six furlong form and I don’t think a small field at Goodwood last time suited him.

Timeform

Preference is for FRANKNESS, who resumed winning ways at Goodwood a fortnight ago and Andrew Balding’s filly should have no problem dropped to the minimum trip.
