Coventry Stakes – River Tiber

Tuesday 3:05pm

It’s probably not surprising that this Wootton Bassett colt is in the list as Aidan O’Brien’s selected runner with champion jockey Ryan Moore in the saddle and unbeaten in two outings. But it’s not just that he’s unbeaten, but the manner of those two successes as he first won on debut at Navan by an impressive 10 lengths before remaining unbeaten when going away from his rivals at Naas last month to score by a cosy two and a half lengths. There’s a lot of unbeaten horses in the field, but River Tiber will be hard to beat according to the money.

Queen Mary Stakes – Midnight Affair

Wednesday 2:30pm

Two-year-olds figure strongly among this year’s most popular horses including this representative of Richard Fahey’s. Having found just Soprano, who herself is a leading fancy for the Albany Stakes, too powerful on debut at Newmarket in May, Midnight Affair was sent off odds-on at Beverley earlier in the month to land the Hilary Needler and she didn’t let her supporters down by outpointing Flora Of Bermuda by a length and a quarter. She’s a filly with speed to burn and will take a bit of catching.

Royal Hunt Cup – Blue For You

Wednesday 5pm

Low drawn horses held sway in the competitive Hambleton Handicap at York last month so this fellow did extremely well to finish a three and a quarter length fifth from stall number 20. It was also  Blue For You’s first start for 215 days and as he is an animal that always seems to require his first run back, connections probably left the Knavesmire more than happy and thinking to themselves there’s a nice pot in him. One of the fiercest handicaps of the week, David O’Meara’s charge will require luck in running, but the cash that we’ve seen indicates that a huge run is expected at the Royal extravaganza.

Norfolk Stakes – Noche Magica

Thursday 2:30pm

Paddy Twomey might not be a name familiar to all, but the Tipperary trainer certainly knows the time of day as Group 1 wins last year with both La Petite Coco and Pearls Galore indicate. This Night Of Thunder colt has been well found in this market returning to the minimum trip after getting touched off by Givemethebeatboys by a wafer-thin margin last time over six furlongs at The Curragh in the Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes.

It might be worth waiting to see whether that form is franked by Givemethebeatboys who runs in Tuesday’s Coventry Stakes and is amongst the top ones in the betting against River Tiber. Noche Magica exhibited plenty of toe when impressively scoring on debut over five furlongs at Cork in April and connections have clearly decided this is the right distance for him for now.

Commonwealth Cup – Little Big Bear

Friday 4:20pm

This fellow landed the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes over six furlongs as a two-year-old in no uncertain terms by seven lengths so it was no surprise that his shrewd connections attempted to stretch him out over further in the 2,000 Guineas in which he finished last.

Apart from running too free at Newmarket, he also finished lame on his right hind so the jury is out upon whether he stays a mile, but he proved an absolute revelation when returned to six furlongs last time in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock where he comfortably accounted for Shouldvebeenaring by a length and a quarter.

That victory made him a short price for this contest, but that hasn’t stopped punters piling in as if he is one of the bankers of the meeting. Little Big Bear will be a tough nut to crack against his own age group and it will be fascinating to see how he gets on later against the older generations in something like the July Cup.
