Preference is for George Boughey’s CHIC COLOMBINE, who was a heavily backed favourite when a promising third at Haydock last month. She sets the standard on that debut effort and is open to progress on this step up in trip. The main form dangers are Silver Spirit and Ebt’s Guard who both shaped with promise in a 6f maiden here 11 days ago. The most interesting newcomers are Royal Hussar and Pour La Vie.
Class Member went close on her drop to 5f at Chepstow last week and is open to more progress at this trip. South Dakota Sioux scored in good style at Wetherby last time and he’s respected off his revised mark, but slight preference is for STORM FOX. Tim Easterby’s lightly raced filly got off the mark with a comfortable win in a Class 5 at Thirsk last Friday and is a major player again on this drop back in grade.
The useful 4yo BAILEYSGUTFEELING put in a dominant display in a competitive 7f handicap at Kempton last time and he should be hard to beat on this drop into a seller. The pick of the opposition is King’s Gem, who has a solid record in his seven starts and could be dangerous back at 6f on his first run after wind surgery.
Preference is for the lightly raced 4yo MY CHIQUITA (NAP), who kicked off her handicap career with a convincing win at Nottingham last week and is open to more progress on this step back up in trip. The big danger is Ivy Avenue, who went very close over 1m2f last time and is on the same mark here.
Libra Tiger has been runner-up twice recently but does not always give his running. That may hand the initiative to RAVENS APPLAUSE who is sufficiently lightly raced to build on his Windsor win 12 days ago. Giving a second chance in a handicap to Woobay is another option and she is feared most.
The most striking candidate to make the breakthrough among this group of maidens appears to be HAVANA HEAT. Finishing runner-up in both his handicaps offers far more solid claims than most of these possess and he ran on pretty well last time after being squeezed out at the stalls, so there’s a reasonable chance that he will stay this extra furlong. Angel of Antrim is perhaps the most likely to follow him home but Al Muzn, who did little on his handicap debut, is now upped in trip with first-time headgear.
Four of these have registered at least one commendable effort recently on turf. It should make for a competitive race but GRANDFATHER TOM seems to be in particularly good heart and that’s all been at 5f. He won with significantly greater authority last time than the narrow winning margin suggests. Foreseeable Future is second on the list.
