There are so many factors in play for next week’s handicaps at the Royal meeting, none more so than the mixed weather forecast which may well be a blessing in disguise for the ground staff as it could provide a natural watering regime for the week rather than the guessing game of putting water down post racing.
Of course I don’t have the draw details to date and therefore not knowing where the pace in a race is coming from, more pertinent on the straight track, but there are still certain entries that strike a betting chord. I will have a look at the other handicaps nearer the time, once the entries/weights are known, but for the time being here is my initial assessment of the two big betting events of the week.

24th June: Wokingham Handicap – Spangled Mac, Lethal Levi
At the time of writing, Paddy’s offering 7/1 the field so with five places up for grabs every horse in the market place is in theory an each-way play. Lethal Levi has obviously been aimed at this race and he took a lovely step forward from his seasonal debut when a closing second to Bielsa at York last time out Four pounds higher here off a mark of 100, he has a huge advantage over some of his market rivals in that he is not ground dependant and that is why I shall be having a saver on him alongside my main selection.
I feel that Orazio (102) and recent Haydock Park winners Jumby (114) and Raatea (95) will do very well to even come close to defying their new marks and much prefer the claims of Lir Speciale, Fresh and Khaadem. However, although 39th in the list as I pen this piece (a maximum field of 28 will go to post) I feel that George Boughey’s charge Spangled Mac is the forgotten horse in the race at a huge price.
He pumped out a four timer at the height of summer last year and followed it up with a cracking second over this course and distance behind Adaay In Asia off a mark off a mark of 94, a race he would have won in a few ore strides. Second off 96 on his final start last season, he has since raced twice at the Spring festival at Meydan and his ninth of 16 behind Taamol should not be undersold as he was only beaten two and a half lengths off what was no more than a moderate pace for a race over that trip having been anchored in rear.
Back down to a rating of 95, he could very well sneak in at the bottom of the weights and I suspect if he does, could be a major market mover on the day of the race.
