A very decent looking maiden here in a race that could end up producing plenty of winners and some very decent horses. A couple by Frankel look solid but may want further in time. The one I’m drawn to is Hurricane Power by Exceed And Excel who has a perfect pedigree for this.
Trainers Paul & Oliver Cole have a good record with 2 year olds on turf over an extended period of time and the Kevin Stott booking, he’s ridden plenty of 2 year old winners this season already, is a positive . Has a good draw in stall 2 and, although plenty of unknowns in these types of races, his profile and the fact the trainers normally get these spot on us a big positive. Probably gets shorter.
15:45 Newbury – Hydration
3 points win
Hydration is of interest and is very lightly raced moving into handicap company for the first time. A never nearer 3rd last time out on soft ground at Windsor when far too keen early and hated the ground. Moved into handicap company now and a mark of 75 looks extremely interesting. Built for this firm ground speed test given his pedigree.
I’m not sure this race will take much winning and if he appreciates this faster ground as he should, he could be a steal at the prices. Another one I fully expect to get shorter come tomorrow and, although the run last time was nothing to shout about, he will come on for it and it was on ground that was far from ideal. Possibly much much better than a handicapper.
17:25 Newbury – Seal Of Solomon
1.5 points each way
An interesting race this one and one I think the favourite Sligo Bay is ripe for taking on here under a penalty for a narrow victory last time out. He’s had a long season after running over the jumps and it will take its toll on at some point – hopefully today. Seal Of Solomon is a horse who’s won five times over these sort of trips and twice on good to form so conditions look absolutely ideal. Had a really productive season last season after taking a few runs to find his stride and came back this season with his best performance yet.
Form not great in his latest run back on turf but struggled for room and was bumped about before running into sixth. Wasn’t given an overly hard time there though once the chance to win had gone so should be plenty in the tank for this one today. Neil Callan returns to the saddle who was in the hot seat that day at Chelmsford. He’s also ridden the horse three times now, finishing fourth and then winning twice. Has to be taken seriously here.
