June 24th: Hardwicke Stakes – Changingoftheguard
Although we garnered more clues from Epsom, it still remains a relative guessing game as to which middle distance stars from the older division which actually turn up here. Will Coronation first and second, Emily Upjohn and Westover, clash again? Remember both blew out in last year’ King George over the course and distance with plausible excuses so will either/both be held back for the 2023 renewal of that great contest? If they run in both races that will mean three Group One events in the space of eight weeks which is a tough schedule with the likelihood of meeting possibly the best of the Classic division in the third leg.
From my point of view the filly had the run of the race under a brilliant ride catching her rivals out coming from the blind side to get first run from the rear. By the time the other jockeys had realised that they had been ambushed the race had already been put to bed by Frankie.
Westover is a more complicated, highly strung sort and seemingly needs everything to go his way, while ante-post favourite Hukum was flattered to beat Desert Crown at Sandown. So I am going to go out on a limb with the forgotten O’Brien charge Changingoftheguard. Winner of the King Edward last year, the only time he has run on good to firm over 12 furlongs, he looked in need of the contest on his comeback run in the Ormonde and that should have teed him up nicely for a shot at this at a big price.

June 24th: Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes – Rohaan
There’s evidence that Aussie sprinter Artorius may lack the tactical speed to win a race of this nature. He finished placed in this race last year and then went on to do the same in the July Cup. However, he may well be placed again at the Royal meeting over this stiff six furlongs as he won the Group One Canterbury Stakes over six and was a half furlongs and was a never-nearer fourth of 11 in the Group One George Ryder Stakes over seven and a half furlongs, both in Oz.
Highfield Princess and Sacred are other obvious players, but hardly outstanding champions at this level and I would rather take a chance on the dual Wokingham winner Rohaan. Fast ground and six furlongs are his optimum conditions and it goes without saying that he has a great affinity for the track in high summer. Those factors could help him bridge the gap to this higher level especially if we get a double-figure field and the seven-year-old can get some decent cover in a fast-run race.
