It’s great that HIGHLAND AVENUE is being kept in training as a five-year-old and I’m sure the Charlie Appleby team’s patience will be rewarded. He put up an excellent third on his return 27 days ago in a top level field and the form has been strongly advertised since. He can continue his progression and should get a perfect lead from the likely pace-setter, Maries Diamond.
If he was coming here off the back of his Doncaster win last season, he’d probably be the odds-on favourite. However, a blow-out in the 2,000 Guineas last month has left him with questions to answer. His stablemate Little Big Bear dropped down to sprinting at Haydock last weekend and we saw how Aidan O’Brien worked the oracle with him. AUGUSTE RODIN now steps up in trip and could prove the stand-out performer as the others appear to be on top of each other from a form angle point of view.
She does have to put a below par run behind her just under a month ago, but it was a race run under conditions that she doesn’t like. Switching back to a faster surface can see PROSPEROUS VOYAGE step back into the winner’s enclosure and regain some of that excellent three-year-old form she had in the locker.
Roger Varian’s colt ran in some very hot company prior to breaking his maiden tag at Pontefract in explosive fashion. RUSSET GOLD was then unable to give away lumps of weight to Betweenthesticks on softer ground at York but is better off with that rival now at the weights. Connections have also decided to take off another valuable 3lbs with the excellent claimer Harry Davies getting the call up.
LIVE IN THE MOMENT ran an absolute cracker in this contest last season off a mark of 90 and now reappears after a very good effort at Doncaster over slightly further. He was drawn in the low numbers last term, but has been gifted the stand side rail right against the paint now. He could prove very tough to peg back now.
Connections will be hoping for a big run from Artistic Star in the Derby (1:30 pm) and that will be a big pointer to the chances of TORITO off a mark of just 95. Lots of these have a long way to go in their careers and we are just scratching the surface with them. The Gosden runner is one of a handful who still has plenty of upside.
It’s quite surprising that the handicapper has only raised him 6lbs for his bloodless victory at York just 17 days ago. SCAMPI travelled much the best for a long time in that event and possibly arrived too early on the scene to just hold on for a half a length success. Hayley Turner will now know his capabilities better and I expect him to be played very late in the game.
He doesn’t appear to have too much in hand of the assessor but that applies to most of the field. However, BADRI raced on the unfavoured centre part of the racecourse when we saw him at York but all the winners came up the stands’ rail at the Dante meeting. We get the ‘pocket rocket’ Hollie Doyle taking over in the saddle on Badri now, who can track the pace and pounce late.
