It’s Oaks day at Epsom and lots of top class horses on display. I love the Woodcote and it’s only when you stand at the stalls and look down and track that you see what kind of test is in front of these two-year-olds. You need a brave horse and rider. No place for the faint hearted here.
The Richard Hannon name is synonymous with two-year-old winners and Haatem would be the ideal way to kick off this meeting. Pat Dobbs rides this son of Phoenix of Spain, who won very easily at Bath, having been an eye-catcher at Goodwood on his first run.
The booking of Ryan Moore the top-weight Revich is a plus. He’s a former course winner which is all important around Epsom’s undulations and tight bends. The 6lb rise in the weights after his win last time at Chester complicates matters a little but the seven-year-old is versatile on ground conditions and tactics so there are lots of positives in his profile.
Just five runners are set to go to post for the Coronation Cup over 1m 4f and the likely market leader Westover is hard to work out. He was an unlucky third in last year’s Derby to Desert Crown but made no mistake when romping home in the Irish Derby after that before disappointing in the King George at Ascot and finishing sixth to Alpinista in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
He made his seasonal debut at Dubai in March and while this looks the perfect fit for him, the tactics will be interesting. I prefer Tunnes who is a fascinating runner for Peter Schiergen, a brilliant trainer. He was also a gifted rider who could have held down any job in any country. If Tunnes gets loose on the front end he may not be caught. The British handicapper rates the German challenger just 1lb behind Westover.
Majestic was a little unlucky at York when trying to come from the back of the pack after a tawdry start. It was a good race on quick ground and nothing stopped up front. He has kept good company this season and the stable are in solid form. Ground conditions are fine and he is still reasonably handicapped considering he won the Cambridgeshire last September.
It’s no surprise to see Aidan O’Brien and John Goseden’s runners at the head of the market. They have dominated this race in recent years and it looks like it could be a match with their representatives Savethelastdance and Soul Sister/Running Lion. Savethelastdance was really impressive in the Cheshire Oaks when running out a stunning 22 length winner. It was very soft ground and she outstayed the others but she is proven at the 1m 4f trip in the Fillies Classic and that will count for plenty. She should handle the different conditions and being by the superstar sire Galileo, she should be able to cope with the track.
