The handicapper might have taken a bit of a chance dropping EMERALDS PRIDE for a reappearance run which she may simply have needed and she’s on a good mark based on her 2022 exploits. The return to turf and drop back to five furlongs should also be in her favour and she shouldn’t be underestimated. Van Gerwen is getting on a bit now but showed he can still make an impact from his reduced mark when narrowly denied at Ripon recently and is feared most.
This is by no means a strong race and Irish raider TRAVEL CANDY makes plenty of appeal on these terms. She shaped as if in need of the experience when well beaten on debut and, though she again didn’t threaten at Naas last time, that is usually an informative maiden, and she should find life much easier at this level. Newcomer Lady of The Garr wouldn’t need to be anything out of the ordinary to figure and she’s worth monitoring in the betting.
UGO GREGORY hasn’t won since October 2021, but he is a regular at this track, and also has three course and distance wins to his name. He pulled clear of the remainder with a next-time-out winner two starts back and he ran respectably without quite matching that form on his latest start. Both of those runs came over the extended mile at this course but he is equally effective at this shorter trip and he is now 15 lb below his last winning mark. Musselburgh scorer Beltane, on debut for Mick Appleby, needs monitoring in the market, while Special Mayson also needs respecting.
MAN OF A’AN caught the eye to some degree on his debut at Kempton in March, finishing with running left without being knocked about, and he built on that promise when narrowly denied at Redcar last time. He still didn’t look the finished article on that occasion, running green under pressure, leaving the impression he should have even more to offer, and he looks the one to beat in this field for a yard who continue to impress. Sidney’s Son is similarly progressive and can pose the biggest threat.
SHALADAR enjoyed a good time of it in handicaps last season, winning three times in all, and he has ran creditably in a couple of starts so far this year. He was easy to back on his reappearance in heavy ground at Redcar but found only one rival too good and he ran to a similar level in a competitive handicap at Hamilton 17 days ago and that form is working out well, with the second and third both winning next time. Shaladar races from the same mark now and is pitched into a lesser handicap, so he looks a solid play. Golden Sands made a good return to turf when third over course and distance last month and is second choice.
HOSTELRY is hardly prolific, but she arrives here having doubled her career tally at Ayr seven days ago and, with her rider’s claim more than off-setting her subsequent rise in the weights, it would come as no surprise to see her firmly in the mix once more. Clotherholme is yet to hit top form this term but his mark is easing and a better showing is anticipated from his handy draw, while El Royale is also worth a look under Oisin Murphy.
Although a career record of one win from 28 starts is hardly compelling, CHIEF CRAFTSMAN did shape well when third at Carlisle last week, and he is worth a chance to confirm that promise from the same career-low mark. Course specialist Bit of A Quirke is an obvious threat, while Cloudy Rose is also respected on the back of a last-time-out success at Brighton.
