A small-but-select cast has been assembled for the latest edition of the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom.

Emily Upjohn, the mount of Frankie Dettori, is back at Epsom a year on from her near miss in the Oaks and she receives weight from her four rivals including Hurricane Lane and Westover, who finished third in the last two renewals of the Derby over course and distance.

Point Lonsdale makes the trip over from Ireland as the Ballydoyle runner takes a step up in trip from last month’s Huxley Stakes success. Tunnes makes the trip over from Germany to complete the field.

The latest Coronation Cup odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise Timeform’s guide to the runners as well as betting tips from the racing boffins can be found below.

Timeform: EMILY UPJOHN looked a top-class filly in the making when a most unfortunate Oaks second over C&D last summer and is fancied to return in style and make the most of her 3 lb sex allowance. All of the remaining quartet can be give a chance but last year’s Irish Derby hero Westover could emerge as the chief threat to the Gosdens’ filly with Hurricane Lane and Point Lonsdale also well in the mix in a fascinating Coronation Cup.

Coronation Cup runners

Hurricane Lane

Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick Age: 5 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 2

2021 Irish Derby/St Leger winner. Only lightly raced since and looked on the wane until bouncing back to his best in first-time cheekpieces when emphatically landing Jockey Club at Newmarket last month. Player in retained headgear.

****

Point Lonsdale

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 4 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 4

Low-mileage 4-y-o who has resumed better than ever this spring with successes in 10f Alleged Stakes at the Curragh and Huxley Stakes at Chester. This first go over 12f should yield further improvement so he’s very much one to consider.

****

Tunnes

Trainer: Peter Schiergen Jockey: Rene Piechulek Age: 4 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 5

Wide-margin winner of Deutsches St Leger at Dortmund and Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich last autumn. Returned with a good second in Carl Jaspers Preis at Cologne so this very smart German colt can’t be discounted.

***

Westover

Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Rob Hornby Age: 4 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 3

High-class 3-y-o who was third in the Derby before landing the Irish equivalent last summer. Made a promising return when second of 10 to Equinox in Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan (12f) in March. Well in the mix.

****

Emily Upjohn

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age: 4 Weight: 8st 13lbs Draw: 1

Most unlucky second in the Oaks over C&D last June, stumbling at start and forced wide. Signed off for 2022 with an emphatic success (hooded) in Fillies and Mares at Ascot in October. Very much the type to progress further at 4 yrs. Big shout in receipt of 3 lb from all her rivals.
