Back Down Under is entitled to improve from her debut and run well but she is against some more precociously-bred sorts today. Though MATRIKA unusually has blinkers on for debut, she is a half-sister to a Prix Morny winner and is taken to score. Mysteries, Grand Job and Gunzburg are most interesting of the rest.
Edward Lynam’s MARSA (nap) can exploit an anomaly since she runs off a mark 11lb lower than her AW rating and will be suited by good ground. Last year’s Birdcatcher Nursery winner Wave Machine has good prospects back in handicap company after two outings in Listed races. Others to consider are Craft Irish, second to a good yardstick at Naas, and Little Queenie, consistent at Dundalk early in the year.
The last French-trained winner of this was Hurricane Run who was far too good for his only serious rival in a three-runner contest in 2006. This is much more competitive, but last season’s Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse winner VADENI gets the vote to reverse Irish Champion Stakes form with Luxembourg who needs to raise his game significantly after a low-key seasonal debut. Bay Bridge possibly rates a bigger threat having finished in front of Jean-Claude Rouget’s colt in the Prix Ganay.
Joseph O’Brien has a really strong hand for this. Slight preference is for JUMBLY who may be better suited by the ground than either Honey Girl or Goldana. Following a good run against colts and geldings last time, Insinuendo has to be taken seriously at a venue where she has a record of two wins and three seconds from eight starts.
Providing that TAHIYRA has made the anticipated improvement from her 1,000 Guineas second this should be relatively straightforward. She was far too good for the subsequent Breeders’ Cup winner Meditate in the Moyglare and confirmed form at Newmarket. You Send Me did well against older rivals at Leopardstown and could battle it out for a place with the Moyglare third Eternal Silence and Prix Marcel Boussac fifth Breege.
Though MISTER MISTER was just behind Drumroll in the Tetrarch Stakes here last time, that was his seasonal debut and he can reverse the placings now raised to this trip. The form of the maiden that Kingswood won at Cork is working out and he can be involved too.
Her run last time when fourth to Savethelastdance at Leopardstown makes STAR GALAXY the standout on form and she should be difficult to beat. All Time Great was well behind her that day but should get much closer on this faster ground. Esquiline was just behind the selection on debut but lacks a recent run.
With further improvement likely after just three starts, STAR KISSED is taken to score on handicap debut despite a wider than ideal draw. The form of Black Hawk Eagle’s Navan win is strong and he should be a big player with Oisin Murphy aboard. Similarly, Ryan Moore’s booking for Newfoundland catches the eye. Snapius, Morph Speed, Golden Twilight and Phoenix Cowboy are others to consider.
