14:10 – Our Scholar

DJ Pete will pose a potent threat if able to build upon the form he showed on his hurdling debut in January but his next run was underwhelming and the most obvious answer is OUR SCHOLAR, who has been involved in two tight finishes over 2m this spring and can improve over today’s longer trip.

14:45 – ALLIHIES

Pak Army looked in superb nick when winning over hurdles and on the Flat last month, and it will be interesting to see how well he copes with a recent hike up the weights. Him Malaya is also respected, having run well in defeat on his recent handicap debut, but ALLIHIES showed some aptitude for hurdling in a Worcester maiden this month and his fairly useful Irish Flat form offers hope he can make significant further progress over jumps.

15:20 – MARETTIMO

Still on a workable mark after last month’s Ludlow success, MARETTIMO was not discredited when third there a fortnight ago and gets the vote. Pottlerath left it rather late in the day to launch his chasing career but comes here after a recent win and is earmarked as the main danger. Longstanding maiden Dorado Dollar has been knocking on the door lately but may have to settle for another minor role from out of the weights.

15:50 – IZAYTE

Chaos Control ran commendably in last month’s 4yo Grade 1 at Aintree and needs to be taken seriously on today’s handicap hurdle debut but slight preference is for recent C&D winner IZAYTE, who may still have further improvement to come. Coolnaugh Haze comes here after some decent efforts and is next on the list.

16:20 – ESPION DU CHENET

All six runners warrant consideration but ESPION DU CHENET gave a good account when fifth in a hot 2m handicap at last month’s Punchestown festival and might make the journey from Ireland worthwhile. Light N Strike can build upon last month’s pleasing reappearance run at Kempton and is second choice, while Dan Skelton’s stalwart Hatcher will also be suited by today’s return to good ground.

16:50 – THE BIG LENSE (nap)

Salley Gardens belied market weakness when third, after a break, this month and the refitted cheekpieces might enable an even bigger run here but the most interesting one is arguably THE BIG LENSE (nap), who didn’t really look suited by the drop back to 2m in a recent Worcester chase but stayed on well for third there and now reverts to hurdling over a more suitable trip and off a 13lb lower mark. Recent Fakenham winner Way Out also has a fighting chance.

17:20 – GRILLON DE MONTY

It might pay to give another chance to GRILLON DE MONTY, who needs to bounce back quickly from a disappointing C&D run 11 days ago but produced a good performance at Huntingdon last month and has only had four starts for Dan Skelton. Grace A Vous Enki was back in fairly good form when third at Doncaster in February but didn’t look wildly enthusiastic there and perhaps a bigger threat to the selection might come from Kilfilum Woods.
