This doesn’t look that strong of a race on paper and MAGGIES TERN sets a good standard on form. She had four starts as a juvenile, her best effort coming when runner-up at Leicester, and she shaped as though she would come on greatly for her reappearance in heavy ground at Nottingham earlier this month. That was a fairly useful handicap and she should find this drop back into maiden company more suitable. Loch Carron showed ability on her sole run for Michael Bell 12 months ago and should have more to offer starting out for Charlie Johnston.
FLYING MOON is a three-time course and distance winner who finished a length behind the reopposing Royal Countess when second on his seasonal reappearance earlier this month. He ran well enough after seven months off, held up in the early stages but making good headway entering the straight and took up the lead two furlongs from home. He left the impression that he would come on for the run in the closing stages and he is taken to reverse form with Royal Countess on slightly better terms. Berry Edge is also closely matched with that pair on course and distance form last time and is another unlikely to be too far away.
FAST AND LOOSE didn’t need to improve much to open his account in first-time cheekpieces in what wasn’t a deep race at Catterick last summer but he went on to finish runner-up in the Ayr Bronze Cup over course and distance later in the season. He was very easy to back on his return to action in heavy ground at Doncaster when third to Woven, and shaped as though the run was needed. He appeals as a horse who will do even better as a four-year-old and is worth backing to overturn that form back on a sounder surface for a yard that are starting to hit top form. Soldier’s Minute caught the eye at York last week and is another to consider.
This race won’t take much winning and SOSALLYCANWAIT may be able to belatedly open her account. She remains a maiden after 18 starts but the overall level of her form gives her solid claims in this contest and she ran a good race back on turf when a close fifth in a big-field handicap at Naas this month. A repeat of that performance should be good enough to see her come home in front. One Last Hug looked better than ever when scoring here two weeks ago so is the obvious threat.
CLASSY AL had a productive time of it last season, winning three times at this course over varying distances, and he ran well on his return over course and distance 19 days ago, doing best of those that raced off the pace despite conceding first run and a slight positional advantage. He has one and a quarter lengths to find with Judgement Call on that running, but he is now 4 lb better off at the weights, and can be expected to strip fitter for that outing. The latter named is a big threat however, with Espressoo not taken lightly either on seasonal bow.
Iain Jardine holds a strong hand here but of his two runners it is NOVAK who makes the most appeal. He is on a lengthy losing run, but has found just one rival too strong on his last three starts, including over course and distance last time. That was a stronger race than this, though, and he remains a horse to be positive about still on his last winning mark. Merricourt, who finished runner-up at Musselburgh last month, can pose the biggest threat.
PARAMARIBO remains a maiden but he arrives in form, having found just one rival too strong at Musselburgh last week where he was doing all of his best work at the finish. He didn’t get the clearest run through on that occasion, however, having to pick his way through rivals, and this more galloping track should suit him much better. The class-dropping Two Auld Pals is second choice ahead of Lawmans Blis.
