Stayers take centre stage in the feature race on the third and final day of the Dante Festival at York.

Broome and Siskany renew rivalries from a thrilling Dubai Gold Cup when a smart ride from Ryan Moore gave the Irish-trained horse a neck victory, but the Godolphin runner is in receipt of 3lbs in Friday’s 15:35.

The smart field of seven also includes last season’s St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov and Lonsdale Cup scorer Quickthorn. Get Shirty, Giavellotto and Tashkhan complete the line up.

Yorkshire Cup tips

Timeform: SISKANY and Broome fought out a fine finish in Meydan’s Dubai Gold Cup last time and Charlie Appleby’s likeable sort is fancied to turn the tables on Aidan O’Brien’s doughty 7-y-o meeting him on 3 lb better terms here with this shorter trip also likely to suit him more. This is no two-horse race though with last year’s St Leger hero Eldar Eldarov and wide-margin Lonsdale Cup winner Quickthorn also well in the mix in a fascinating Yorkshire Cup.

Yorkshire Cup runners

Eldar Eldarov

Trainer: Roger Varian Jockey: David Egan Age: 4 Weight: 9st 8lbs Draw: 6

Most progressive at 3 yrs when landing the St Leger at Doncaster in September on just his fifth start. Turned in his first poor effort when beating only one in Ascot’s Long Distance Cup at Ascot following month. Very much the type to go on again this season so needs considering.

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 7 Weight: 9st 6lbs Draw: 1

Very smart horse who resumed winning ways in 15-runner Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan (2m) in March by neck from Siskany. 3 lb worse off with that rival but he’s still firmly in the picture.

Get Shirty

Trainer: David O’Meara Jockey: Jason Watson Age: 7 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 3

Smart gelding. In good form in Meydan this winter until coming in last of 15 to Broome in Dubai Gold Cup in March. Found to have bled there and he’s the sort to bounce back.

Trainer: Marco Botti Jockey: Andrea Atzeni Age: 4 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 7

Smart colt. Suffered a poor run when ninth of 15 to Broome in Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan (2m) on his seasonal return. A dual scorer in 2022 so he’s no forlorn hope.

Trainer: Hughie Morrison Jockey: Oisin Murphy Age: 6 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 4

Showed himself to be a smart stayer when 14-length winner of Lonsdale Cup here in August. Yet to recapture that form since but he wasn’t disgraced on his return when sixth of 15 to Broome in Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan (2m). Can’t be ruled out.

Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick Age: 5 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 2

Likeable sort who resumed with 14f win in Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan before posting an excellent second of 15 to Broome in Dubai Gold Cup there, travelling strongly long way but collared close home. Meets that rival on 3 lb better terms and he’s the one to beat.

Trainer: Brian Ellison Jockey: Ben Robinson Age: 5 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 5

Winless since 2021 but he’s a smart stayer who has posted solid efforts to make the frame in Nottingham listed event and Prix de Barbeville at Longchamp this spring. Cheekpieces back on. Shortlisted.
