13:50 Newbury – Noble Style

ITV Saturday gets under way here with the Listed Carnarvon Stakes for 3yo over 6f. Very hard to oppose NOBLE STYLE who travelled like a sprinter in the 2000 Guineas but was far from disgraced eventually finishing sixth behind Chaldean. He looked like a blatant non stayer and the idea one would guess is to come here and then head to the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Goes for William Buick and trainer Charlie Appleby and showed his class as a juvenile with a tasty victory in the Gimcrack.

14:05 Newmarket – Gulmarg (each way)

ITV also go racing at Newmarket Saturday starting with this handicap over 1m. GULMARG has plenty of placed form to his name for Sean Woods but the door might open here under Harry Davies who takes off a useful 3lb. Davies is not using his claim much at the moment so this looks significant and Gulmarg was a decent third to Surely Not at this track when last seen in April. Must have an each-way chance at least.

14.25 Newbury – Yibir

Up in class now for a Group 3 over 1m4f. This is hard because it’s hard to know how good Bolshoi Ballet is and how much Yibir will be in a good frame of mind. It’s a cracking contest with Haskoy no mug and Old Harrovian a possible massive improver. I’ll keep the faith with Breeders’ Cup hero YIBIR, but we could well be in trouble if there is no pace. The Charlie Appleby runner was last seen winning the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket last year and has been absent some time. That said he’s a class act.

14:40 Newmarket – Ararat (each way)

Another handicap this time over 6f. ARARAT might be worth a look here as an each-way selection. A mark of 77 might be a good one and Hayley Turner rides for Dave Simcock. Ararat made his debut at Yarmouth finishing a fine second to Zoology who ran in the Greenham, and then went to Redcar where he was a flop. His final juvenile effort was another second over this trip at Wolverhampton. Should have more to give.

15:00 Newbury – Exoplanet

A big betting race in the London Gold Cup Handicap for 3yo over 1m2f. Lots of unexposed types in this. EXOPLANET was four lengths behind Military Order at this course when last seen and a mark of 97 might be very fair. My hope looked good on debut at Newbury but then flopped in the Autumn Stakes. His return suggested a good season ahead and he’s had a crack at this trip unlike make of the others. Hopefully a good run for Jack Mitchell and Roger Varian.

15:15 Newmarket – Striking Star

Now a handicap over 7f. Not much in the handicap here and hopefully STRIKING STAR can give Adam Kirby a welcome winner for Charlie Appleby. My hope has run second in both starts this term including when behind Yacowlef at this track. He kept on well that day and although up 5lb that bit of form might well be good enough.

15:35 Newbury – Mutasaabeq

The main event of the day in the Group 1 Lockinge over 1m. There are some talented horses in here but all of them will have to be right at their best to beat MUTASAABEQ if he is in the same form as at Newmarket last time. That was in the bet365 Mile when the Charlie Hills-trained runner romped over Irish 2000 Guineas hero Native Trail and Light Infantry. Others might be better by the end of the season but Jim Crowley’s mount will be hard to pass.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
