Dorothy Lawrence appears to have little chance of beating Persian Dreamer given the Amo Racing filly was 3¼ lengths too good for her at Newmarket, but the winner was helped by finding cover at a meeting where the front runners tended to flounder, and more importantly, Dorothy Lawrence is bred to relish fast turf, which she will get in the Marygate Fillies’ Stakes.
Quick ground must be a concern for Persian Dreamer, who is a daughter of the fragile Calyx, who saw his career twice interrupted by injuries sustained on quick ground. The offspring of Calyx have done well so far, but his winners have come on ground softer than good as a rule, and I’d be surprised if many of them really relished hearing their hooves rattle.
That’s certainly not the case on breeding for Dorothy Lawrence, who is by a fast ground performer in Soldiers Call and a half-sister to Festive Star, who gained three of her four wins on ground described as firm. Hopefully there will be no rain, and with the straight track riding fast on Wednesday and Thursday, the different conditions may allow the speedy Dorothy Lawrence to reverse Newmarket form.
Pledge Of Honour had a renaissance last year, winning four and placed in three more of his eight starts last year, and his only moderate run came on his seasonal reappearance, which on the face of it, suggests he might need the run in the one televised race at Newbury, his first start since last August.
Dean Ivory’s break returners running on turf have fared well this season, however, and of the four that qualify, he’s had two winners, another outrunning huge odds, and only the one disappointing run. One of those winners was Moonlit Cloud at Nottingham last week, and she was one that had run poorly on her reappearance a couple of times, so it gives hope that Pledge Of Honour is ready to go here.
If so, he has a fair bit in his favour, having a win and a second from two starts at Newbury, and 1¼m on good or quicker ground is ideal – indeed his lifetime record under such conditions reads: 126461132114, improving to 1121321 on left-handed tracks.
Silver Lady won well in a big-field maiden at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting, and with two of those behind winning subsequently, the form looks as strong as you’d expect from the track and time of year. Her dam was very precocious, as was her granddam, and Silver Lady is likely to be hitting her peak sooner rather than later. She ought to take this step up in class in her stride and quicker ground shouldn’t be a concern on pedigree.
The Knights Solicitors Handicap is typically competitive for such contests at this meeting, but Eeetee has loads in his favour assuming the ground stays as it is, and he should reward each-way support at a fair price. Best on a flat track and on a sound surface at 1¼m, Eeetee is unbeaten in three handicap runs under such conditions for David O’Meara, and remains fairly treated despite winning at Haydock on his return. In fact, he’s able to race off the same mark as when a close fourth of 16 here last autumn, and a repeat of either of those runs would see him go very close from what looks a favourable draw in stall 8.
Eldar Eldarov and Broome have penalties to carry here, with the former looking vulnerable on his first start since the St Leger, and he looks opposable. Broome showed surprising stamina when winning at Meydan over 2m, and the shorter trip suits, but I just prefer Quickthorn, who is best when dominating and didn’t get to the front in the Dubai Gold Cup. A winner of the Lonsdale Cup here last August, he will take the beating if getting loose on the lead this time.
