A few of these are interesting from a handicapping point of view such as Taravara, Le Reveur, Newton Jack and Greg The Great, but RIVAL (nap) may prove the answer having run well to finish third in both starts since returning last month, including in a much stronger contest last time. Were the ground to dry out then Lenny’s Spirit could pose the main danger having run so well on good to firm last summer, including off higher marks than today. Flag of Truth and Sandy Paradise are others to consider in an open race.
If building on his return to form at Bath last time the unexposed Wind Your Neck In would enter the equation, as would Wisper were she to prove as effective on a galloping track like this as she is at Brighton. However, the vote goes to MUSTAZEED who appeared to win with a bit more in hand than the margin would suggest on stable debut over C&D last month, where Time Interval finished second and Tuxedo Junction third. The last-named is less exposed than the pair who finished ahead of him so could pose the biggest danger this time.
Rust E Boy is by far the pick of the pair with racecourse experience and the form of the contest in which he finished fifth on his debut here is working out well, but there are some interesting newcomers up against him. Baheer comes from the stable that has taken three of the last four runnings of this race, while Phone Tag and Rednblue Sovereign also represent yards that have already tasted success with 2yo newcomers this year. However, the vote goes to BATTLE CHARGE, an early foal whose stable has a good record with 2yos first time out and struck with a debutant at Nottingham a week ago.
As Roger Varian said in his Stable Tour interview, Yarmouth winner RESOLUTE MAN “could be anything”, and a St James’s Palace entry bodes well. Good Karma also looks smart and Shaaden (second choice) remains a very promising filly if judged on last season’s debut effort. It’s best to put a line through her reappearance when she lost all chance at the start.
Equatorial would have won at Doncaster had he been that bit wiser but KOKOMO’s debut behind one who has since held her own at Listed level was every bit as promising. Eyeshadow is interesting when her yard has introduced so many of their best horses at this venue.
There is very little racecourse evidence provided by this field but clearly the best of it belongs to TONYMONTANA thanks to his second at Salisbury last September. Nothing To Sea looks next best, but it’s a little to early to be giving up on on Baaeed’s half-brother Naqeeb. The latter’s stablemate Seendid reads best of the newcomers and he is feared most.
Cherryhawk finished a clear second on her handicap debut at Goodwood 13 days ago and is respected, but there are several in here who may improve a fair bit now upped in trip and/or tackling their first handicap. Lady Rascal, Roman Art and Lucky Fifteen are amongst the most interesting in that category, but a chance is taken with SALAMANCAN, who hasn’t shown much in his first three starts but, being a half-brother to Morandi and Ottilien amongst others, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see better from him.
This looks a fiendish puzzle, including because the three recent turf winners scored on soft ground, which they are unlikely to encounter today. Talap (second choice) may be the pick of that group, as Masqool needs to prove his stamina as well as his effectiveness on the ground. Plenty of others have each-way claims, though, including ROSE LIGHT who is far more lightly raced than most of these and may find improvement over this longer trip. Recent AW winner Sainte Colette is also on the shortlist.
