13:50 – Mondammej

The more it dries the better the chance of Mondammej, who goes well at York and races back at 5f here, which is his optimum trip for all he has form over a bit further. He can lose ground at the stalls, but is ideally suited by weaving through from the back off a strong pace, with his finishing kick a potent weapon when on song.

His record in 5f handicaps on good or faster ground is 13311, and this will be the first time in a while he’s had all his ducks in a row. Back on his last winning mark, he would make these all go with a repeat of his second to Royal Acclaim over C&D last July, and will go close if the gaps appear at the right moments.

14:25 – Free Wind

The fact that she only raced once last year is a slight concern, but the way Free Wind won the Lancashire Oaks, despite meeting serious and prolonged interference, marked her down as out of the top drawer, and she is impossible to oppose in the absence of any negative vibes from her trainer. She was talked of as an Arc candidate after her Haydock win, and her rivals are simply not in that league, with the best of them arguably Stay Alert, who was well behind her in the aforementioned Lancashire Oaks.

15:00 – Cruyff Turn

Now 1lb lower than when winning this last year, Cruyff Turn has fared well with the draw, pulling stall 3, ideal for one with his prominent racing style and good ground suits him better than softer, with his handicap record on good ground reading 121410, with two of those wins coming over track and trip.

He needs to avoid losing ground as the stalls open here, especially with his draw in mind, but looks to have been lined up specifically for a tilt at retaining this valuable prize, and needs the utmost respect.

15:35 – The Foxes

The Foxes kept improving throughout last year and showed he’d trained on when second to Indestructible in the Group 3 Craven at Newmarket, travelling like the best horse but getting a little tired in the closing stages as if the race were needed.

He is closely related to both Bangkok and Yaazy, who were at their best at this sort of trip, so the step up to an extended ten furlongs is expected to suit, and his yard was off the mark here in the meeting’s opening race. Despite having plenty of experience already, he appeals as having more to offer, especially when his stamina is drawn out.

16:10 – Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk was impressive when winning the Listed Marygate Stakes here a year ago, and was thrown in against the colts at Royal Ascot, but got jarred up on the firm ground at Ascot and missed the rest of the season. Quick ground would be an obvious concern on her return from a lengthy break, but she remains a filly of real potential at sprint trips, and I want to keep her onside.
