It’s Dante Day at York on Thursday and the big question is will we unearth another superstar like we had in Desert Crown last year who went on to win the Epsom Derby.
13:50 York – Alligator Alley
This son of Kingman has form on turf to match his form on an artificial surface. He was highly-tried in the big sprint on Finals day at Newcastle but was a course and distance winner here in 2019. A strong-running type is drawn in stall two and in an open race, has to be of interest.
14:25 York – Aristia
She nearly sprang a huge surprise in this contest last season and likes fast ground as she showed when getting mightily close to Nashwa at Goodwood in the Nassau Stakes. She races prominently and might just catch these on the hop if given an easy lead. Sea Silk Road is the danger as she very nearly won the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot last year. She’s only a four-year-old and could still be improving.

15:00 York – Cruyff Turn
Tim Easterby’s runner was narrowly beaten in this race last year off just a 1lb higher mark and has to be dangerous from stall three. Brunch has similar credentials and should be a force on the opposite side of the track in stall 19. Northern Express had a good win at Thirsk last time and this son of Zoffany has run some good races at the track before. He’s weighted to be there or thereabouts.
15:35 York – Continuous
It would be a huge deal for the master of Ballydoyle Aidan O’Brien to break the stranglehold that UK trainers have on the Dante Stakes. He has won the race a few times (2006, ’09 & 2010) but Sir Michael Stoute has won it more recently, most notably with Desert Crown and it’s always been a good pointer to the Epsom Derby for him. Passenger won impressively at Newmarket and can’t be ignored for these connections in what looks a very open contest. Epictetus scrambled home at Epsom on is season debut on what was bad ground after a good two-year-old career. There’s plenty with chance and at the prices, the unbeaten Continuous could be the better value.
16:10 York – Walbank
Amo Racing hoped Walbank was a banker at the Royal meeting last year but just got run out of it close home in the Norfolk Stakes. He didn’t run much after that, but there is no doubting his physical presence and he will be ready for this.
