13:50 York – MONDAMMEJ

ITV Thursday gets under way here with a handicap over 5f. MONDAMMEJ is becoming a dangerously well handicapped horse once again. The secret to this animal is fast ground, and while it won’t be that at York it might well be good enough. My selection was far from disgraced in the soft last time, yet has been dropped to a mark of 97. He runs this track well, and he’s worth chancing eachway. Can Hardie rides for Anthony Brittain.

14.05 Sailsbury – RELIEF RALLY

ITV also show one race from Salisbury Thursday in this conditions race for 2yo over 5f. RELIEF RALLY looked pretty good at Windsor first time out, and will have no difficulty with some juice in the ground at this track. William Haggas trains and Tom Marquand rides. Has to give away weight to his rivals but I suspect will be good enough.

14.25 York – STAY ALERT

Up in class here for the Group 2 Middleton Fillies’ Stakes over an extended 1m2f. Free Wind should win this if anywhere near right. That said, I’m happy to have an eachway bet against the likely hot favourite. I’ll be backing STAY ALERT eachway for Hughie Morrison and Oisin Murphy. Both jockey and trainer are in tremendous form, and the filly looked progressive last season before a disappointing run on her final start in very testing ground at top-level company. This surface is ideal, and I happen to believe this trip is her best, even though she has tried further. She won a Group 3 at Newbury last term in style.

15.00 York – TOSHIZOU

Another handicap this time over 1m. TOSHIZOU might be just the type of ride that brings out the best in Jamie Spencer. The latter was on top when the selection finished a very decent fourth at Newmarket last time in a big field. A strong pace will suit here, and I expect a hold up ride with a strong finish. Roger Fell trains and I’ll have a few quid on eachway even from a nasty high draw.

    15.35 York – EPICTETUS

The big one of the week for many in the Derby trial that is the Group 2 Dante Stakes over an extended 1m2f. EPICTETUS may have been undervalued because connections have talked about the French Derby instead of the main event at Epsom. However, that might all change with a big run here. Frankie Dettori rides for John & Thady Gosden, and the Italian got a good tune out of Epictetus when scoring at the home of the Derby last time. The Vertem Futurity runner-up stays well, is fit and has perfect ground. Hard to keep out the frame.

    16.10 York – WALBANK

Listed company for a sprint for 3yo over 5f. WALBANK was a pretty useful juvenile, finishing second in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and third in the Molecomb at Glorious Goodwood. In that last race he was behind Rocket Rodney, but I’m not sure the track suited him that day. Goes for the Amo team of Kevin Stott and Dave Loughnane. So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
