The fact that David Loughnane’s FFION has strong form here is always a positive. The yard could do with a change of luck but the ground will be no problem. She does have to overcome a tricky starting position in stall 12 but the race is loaded with natural pace, so hold-up tactics could prove to be positive on the run to the line.
Highly-tried after winning on his racecourse debut last season and wasn’t completely disgraced at the Royal meeting, despite not winning again. SCHOLARSHIP is obviously a big unit and was gelded over the winter before his return victory at Newbury over 7f. The step up to a mile today will suit and he can continue to climb up the ratings ladder.
There are no flies on trainer Ian Williams and despite a string of zeros to his name, CAP FRANCAIS was second in this contest last season from a 6lb lower mark. With the Epsom Derby winning rider Richard Kingscote booked, you know they mean business. Expect a late challenge off Cap Francais from a good starting stall in box three.
POINT LONSDALE proved himself to be a super juvenile and won the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh before finishing second in the Group 1 National Stakes to Native Trail at the same venue. We only saw him once last season – when down the field in the 2,000 Guineas – but made a very decent return to action 26 days ago to win a Group 3 at the Curragh. He showed plenty of quality, guts and determination to prove he retains his old ability and he is one of the older brigade to keep on side this season.
The Chester Cup is going to be a real test of stamina by the time it rolls around towards the end of day three. METIER has no problems from a stamina perspective and comes here off the back of a huge run behind Wise Eagle at Musselburgh. That form has already been given a boost and expect this confirmed mud lark to be tucked away mid-division until smuggled into the race late on.
MEDIEVAL GOLD is an outsider for the Epsom Derby at the moment and trainer William Haggas knows the form Klondike who beat Banderas at Newbury last time. It’s not like him to send one on the long journey to Chester without thinking. This is a suitable race and conditions are in his favour.
