If you’ve never been racing at Chester, you really should put it on your bucket list. It is a really unique experience, but the draw is all important around its tight bends and it is amazing how many horses suffer from poor-draw sickness!
It is so hard to go against a combination of Ryan Moore and Richard Hannon with a speedy juvenile in Ziggy’s Phoenix that has form on slow ground and is drawn in stall one. The booking of Oisin Murphy on the Hugo Palmer-trained filly Tierney is also significant. She’s by the champion sire Mehmas and cost a few quid at the sales but this is her debut run. While she’s really well related on pedigree, you’re always taking a chance that the two-year-olds will handle this track. Experience can be so important.
Michael Appleby’s Michaela’s Boy run well when finishing fourth in a decent conditions race at Newcastle on All Weather Finals day. He kept at it really well over 6f that day and this 5f trip is all about speed and taking advantage of a good draw. He’ll housed in stall four and, if he can make good use of that, is dangerous to ignore.
Ballydoyle provide the favourite in Savethelastdance who was a very impressive maiden winner at Leopardstown on his seasonal debut. She looks a stayer and is hard to oppose. However, for a bit of value, the Ralph Beckett-trained Luckin Brew is a daughter of Lope de Vega and form has been boosted since last seen when finishing second in a Listed event at Pontefract.
Arrest is another favourite who is hard to oppose and we saw these colours carried to victory in the 2,000 Guineas last weekend by another son of Frankel, Chaldean. The Gosden-runner looked very raw last season including when narrowly beaten in a Group One race at Saint Cloud. He looks progressive and is hard to oppose.
A 6f handicap sprint ends the ITV coverage and while Lakota Blue does not have the best of draws in stall six, he normally breaks pretty well and is highly-regarded by connections. He should give a very good account in this competitive handicap. Richard Hannon and Ryan Moore team up with Royal Dress who has a lot in her favour.
