STATE OF BLISS was fairly useful on the Flat last year, winning a handicap from a mark of 87 at Ripon, and he shaped much better than on his hurdling debut when finishing third in a novice hurdle at Kempton last week. That was arguably a stronger race than this and a similar performance should be enough to see him open his account in this sphere for an in-form yard. Way Out and Copshill Lad look the other key players in a notably thin race.
LEGENDARY RHYTHM has found her feet over fences of late, justifying good support when recording a first chase success at Leicester in February and she displayed a good attitude when following up at Wincanton in March. That form looks solid for the grade and she looks the percentage play to complete a hat-trick in this having only been raised 3lb in the weights. Jigginstown King and Auditoria can also figure.
SCUDAMORE was a fair winner on the Flat and finally put it all together over hurdles when opening his account in this sphere at Stratford 16 days ago, having no problem with a drop back in trip and readily stretching clear in the closing stages.
A subsequent 7lb rise in the weights seems fair and he may have more to offer as a hurdler now having gotten his head in front. The lightly-raced Champagne Town is an interesting contender on his handicap debut and might be the one to give the selection most to do.
The most recent piece of solid form on offer is GAVIN‘s second to an upwardly mobile rival – who has since franked the form – in a Taunton handicap and, entitled to come on for that run, which was his first for around six months, he is taken to go one better here in what doesn’t look the deepest race. True Romance needs to bounce back but will be a threat if able to do so and Hayedo should be in the mix, provided he is ready to roll following an eight-month absence.
MIDNIGHT MARY is a likeable type who won a couple of handicaps over hurdles at this course last season and she made a highly satisfactory start over fences when winning at Wetherby in January. That was a fair race for the grade and she has improved in defeat since, filling the runner-up spot three times and staying on well at Southwell last time to suggest this much longer trip may unlock further improvement.
She is a solid selection racing from 3lb higher, with Duc de Beauchene and Flying Verse taken to pose the biggest dangers.
This doesn’t look like a strong hunter chase and it may be worth chancing FOR RITA on her first attempt in this sphere. She was well held in a bumper at Cork four years ago, but has since gone on to win seven times in points, her latest victory coming a fortnight ago, so she arrives fit and in form. Raleagh Flora and Doctor Tom are also of interest.
