Gina Andrews teamed up with Milton Harris to land this prize in 2022 and their representative this year PYRAMID PLACE is only 2lb higher than when winning a much stronger race than this at Wetherby in February. Expect him to pose a potent threat from off the pace in this grade. There were mitigating circumstances when Ike Sport was a below-par favourite at Fontwell last month and his earlier form makes him the main danger.
A mixed bag for this maiden. Manimole has the form to play a big part but her stamina is unproven over this trip and point winner OOH BETTY looks a much more solid proposition on the back of her promising Exeter handicap second and with Brian Hughes now in the saddle. Hurdling newcomers Ambush Annie and Oneway Express (second choice) both bring potential and could emerge as threats.
Not so competitive as the numbers suggest. Donald McCain’s Zafar (second choice) is very much one to consider off an easing mark while Bright Sunbird goes well fresh so can’t be dismissed after a break and Whenitrainsitpours is weighted to have a say. TELLAIRSUE took his form up a notch on his first go over a staying trip when scoring at Fontwell though and a 3lb rise doesn’t look sufficient to prevent him from following up.
The ground will be crucial as the likes of Minella Buster and recent winner Marettimo would prefer a sound surface and even Kakamora (second choice), who won in good style at Huntingdon, would have a question mark against him if the ground turned soft. BRIANSTORM has no such fears and is well treated if a recent satisfactory return to action has brought him back to anything approaching his best form.
Plenty are in with a shout. Last year’s winner Finest View (second choice) should benefit from this drop back in trip so must enter calculations along with recent scorers Kincardine and Lipa K. Alex Hales’ Casi Crudo is another to consider but the vote goes to Amy Murphy’s handily weighted CAROLE’S PASS, who posted a good fifth in a strong Ayr handicap last time and can race off the same mark here.
Robert Walford’s FLASH GORCOMBE (nap) has really found his feet of late over fences and a 6lb rise for his stylish Wincanton success doesn’t look sufficient to prevent him from completing a hat-trick. C&D scorer Estate Italiana could emerge as the chief threat ahead of the in-form pair Elmount and Miladygrace.
Nicky Henderson’s Brave Jen (second choice) appeals most of those with experience now she has had has her sights lowered but there are some newcomers who bring potential, not least Fergal O’Brien’s winning Irish pointer FAHA BELLE and she gets the vote. Fellow debutantes Massima Bella and Trudie Glen also need factoring into a bumper where the market should prove highly informative.
Tour Ovalie ran well for a long way on her Newbury debut and should go well again but MARY gets the vote after her promising runs at Warwick and Cheltenham. Some interesting newcomers include Chatty Chich for Dan Skelton, Call Her Clever and After Many Days and the market should sort them out as to expectations.
