The Johnston stable won this race with a newcomer last season and have another interesting debutant this time around with Sennockian, a €120,000 son of No Nay Never. Sennockian is a half-brother to the Fillies’ Mile winner Pretty Gorgeous and makes appeal on paper ahead of his debut.
Freedom Flyer shaped with encouragement on his reappearance at Southwell in March and he built on that to score at Thirsk a few weeks later, snapping a long losing run that stretched back to July 2020. Freedom Flyer then ran respectably when third under a penalty at Wolverhampton and it’s easy enough to overlook his latest effort at Catterick as it came the day after the Wolverhampton outing. He remains on a fair-looking mark and, while he’s raced at five furlongs this season, will have no problem stepping back up to six furlongs.
Morning Sun had shaped with promise when third on his handicap debut and final outing for Sir Michael Stoute at Windsor last season and encouragement could also be taken from his third-place finish on his reappearance and first start for Keith Dalgleish at Redcar last month. Morning Sun, who had been gelded prior to his return, is entitled to be sharper with that outing under his belt and remains relatively unexposed, particularly over a mile and a quarter, a trip he showed he stays at Redcar last time.
Abu Royal was too green to do himself justice on debut at Kempton but he clearly learned plenty from that experience as he left that form well behind when runner-up at Thirsk a couple of weeks later. He made the standard-setter work hard at Thirsk, pulling four and a quarter lengths clear of the third, and that is the best piece of form on offer. There should also be more to come from this lightly-raced colt.
Rock Melody made an encouraging start for the Jim Goldie yard when a keeping-on fourth in a five-furlong handicap at Musselburgh last month and she also shaped well over the same course and distance last time, again leaving the impression that she’d benefit from stepping back up in trip (won over seven furlongs for her previous yard). Rock Melody can step forward on those promising efforts now tackling six furlongs.
Rock of England offered encouragement when fifth on his return at Haydock recently, impressing with how he travelled but ultimately leaving the impression that he’d be better for the run. Rock of England, who was making his first start since being gelded, could still have more to offer and the cheekpieces go back on here.
Uberrima Fides wasn’t at his best at Dundalk last month but the handicapper has eased him another 2 lb and he is potentially on a fair mark based on the pick of his efforts. It’s possible this step up in trip could bring about a bigger effort and he gets the vote.
