Horse Racing tips: Matt Chapman’s slick picks for Sunday’s ITV Racing

It's the first Classics of the year and Matt has his picks for 1000 Guineas day.

13:50 – Newmarket – Firstman
14:05 – Hamilton – Postileo
14:25 – Newmarket – Joyful Act
15:00 – Newmarket – With The Moonlight
15:40 – Newmarket – Dream Of Love

13:50 – Newmarket – Firstman

ITV Sunday gets under way here with a heritage handicap over 1m6f. FIRSTMAN could be chucked in here for Tony Martin and William Buick. My selection ran a belter at Leopardstown last time over hurdles and while he’s untested off this sort of mark on the grass on the Flat he might well be good enough. Has run well in big fields in the past. Fascinating runner.

14:05 – Hamilton – Postileo

POSTILEO misses the Chester Cup for this but is hard to be confident about as he has been off the track since October 2021. Then he was a winner at Doncaster in good style and he also has a second in the Chester Cup to his name. He’s 1lb higher than when last seen so the handicapper has not been kind for the return. That said, I have no doubt he’s the best horse in this field.

14:25 – Newmarket – Joyful Act

Now a Listed race over one mile and two furlongs. JOYFUL ACT seems packed full of stamina and might surprise a few here for Charlie Appleby and James Doyle. The daughter of Frankel showed promise on debut at Wolverhampton before hacking up at Newcastle when making all. She’s ditched by William Buick but might be a decent each-way prospect here.

15:00 – Newmarket – With The Moonlight

This is the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes over 1m1f. WITH THE MOONLIGHT has only run once in the UK since landing the Pretty Polly Stakes last year and that was when last in the Oaks at Epsom. Since then she’s been to America and Meydan but she remains a talented horse and might well stay on too strongly for this lot on the back of her second to In Italian in the Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland last month. Another hopeful for Charlie Appleby with William Buick on top.

15:40 – Newmarket – Dream Of Love

A Classic big race of the day in the 1000 Guineas over 1m. I’m going Godolphin here again but without much confidence via DREAM OF LOVE for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. A winner on debut at Newmarket, Dream of Love was then third in the Listed Montrose Stakes before chasing home Mawj over seven furlongs in Dubai. There’s no doubt this trip will suit her much better and I have a feeling she’s got plenty to offer in her Classic year. Have a few quid on each-way.
