MIDNIGHT SHUFFLE made a winning start for this yard in a bumper at Kelso and she built on previous promise over hurdles when opening her account in this sphere at Musselburgh in February. That was just an ordinary contest but she has progressed further in defeat since, recording a career-best effort when runner-up in first-time cheekpieces back at Kelso last month. The winner that day is progressive and Midnight Shuffle holds solid claims back in novice company. Poetic Music will find this much more suitable than the Dawn Run at Cheltenham and must be feared.
NINETOFIVE has a stout pedigree and has shaped particularly well in three starts over hurdles at around two miles so far with that in mind. He has attracted support, too, so is clearly held in some regard, and he is very much respected now moving up in trip on handicap debut. An opening mark of 105 could well underestimate him with improvement on the cards now having his second start since undergoing a breathing operation. Rickety Gate was in good form when last seen in the winter so he may emerge as the main danger after a three-month break.
KNOCKNAMONA is the oldest of these in this veterans’ handicap but he has been shaping as though the return to three miles recently. He won back-to-back handicaps at Newcastle and Carlisle at the beginning of the year, but he has looked sluggish on his last two outings, and he still isn’t badly treated on the pick of his form now in veterans company. Caboy has been holding his form well and rates the biggest threat, while the drop back in class should help Niceandeasy.
SNAKE ROLL only made his debut under Rules in October – he hit the frame all starts in points – but he made a deep impression when making a winning start at Kelso. He didn’t improve as expected in a listed event next time, though easily defied a penalty back in novice company at Newcastle, and he wasn’t disgraced in a Grade 2 last time. The step back up in trip will suit now he is entering handicaps and this mark could prove very lenient indeed. Glentruan has become somewhat hit-and-miss of late, but is capable from this mark and feared.
WHISTLEINTHEDARK isn’t the first horse from this yard that has shown much improved form since sent chasing, making a mockery of his mark when making a winning debut at Market Rasen in December and progressing another chunk when coming out on top in a match at Wetherby next time. He showed a willing attitude when completing a hat-trick at Kempton last time and, just 4 lb higher now, he is very much the one to beat again. Cornerstone Lad is the obvious danger as the other pair both have questions to answer.

While he could do with brushing up on his jumping technique, CASTLE RUSHEN is nevertheless appealing having put in a good shift back in this sphere at Newcastle last time. He goes off the same mark here and both this step up in trip and the addition of more severe headgear (sports a first-time visor) are potentially positive factors. Stablemate Miss Milano is three from three this season and needs considering but Salvino, who looks pretty solid overall, is feared most.
THISTLEBUFFS is related to some above-average types and he has shown plenty to work on when hitting the frame in both of his starts at Kelso and Wetherby so far. Admittedly, he will be suited by further than two miles in time, and has shaped like a stayer, but he finds himself in a winnable race now making his handicap debut, and he should prove much better than a mark of 95 in time. Duyfken and El Jefe head the list of dangers.
SANITISER was a useful performer on the Flat for Paul & Oliver Cole, winning four times, the latest of those from a BHA mark of 86, and he has seemingly been brought along gradually for this yard in three starts over hurdles so far. He was too free when below form at Market Rasen last time and, while he doesn’t look like living up to his Flat form in this sphere, he is potentially very well treated now handicapping in this sphere based on it. Fathers Advice, twice a runner-up last month, and Leopolds Rock, who has a good record when partnered by Brian Hughes, heads the dangers.
