2.30 – Plumpton – Breaking Cover

Those with the best form having seen a hurdle or more at the start of their careers could very well get off the mark here. Clongowes ran the best race of his career in this sphere when a length and a quarter second to Embolden over the course and distance and should start favourite based on that run, while after another wind operation Father of Jazz, along with perennial bridesmaid Aviles have solid enough claims, but Rex Dingle’s mount Breaking Cover gets the vote having hugely caught my eye on his comeback following a spell of 203 days on the side lines.

The five-year-old ran in a pretty good bumper at Ascot won by Fire Flyer when given a very quiet ride by Richie McLernon, hidden out the back and only being asked a soft question at the furlong pole as his astute job jockey got him into all sorts of trouble down the side of the track. I fancy that there is gangs more to come from this son of Getaway and although in time he will be suited by two and a half miles, any support for him here on his timber topping debut would be significant.

2.45 – Stratford – Keplerian

Newton Abbot winner Begin The Luck will have to take another step forward here to follow up that workmanlike performance, while Line of Descent needs to find something to end his run of frustrating place efforts which he could easily do in a moderate contest even for this level.

However, Fergal O’Brien’s charge Keplerian has shown enough promise both over hurdles and on his chase debut to warrant an interest here. The son of Telescope was still in with a shout turning for home at Leicester last time out, but found the extended two and three quarter miles stretching him after making numerous niggly, novicey errors down the far side. Having found two miles too short over hurdles, this two and a half miles should prove right up his street and the selection has a real chance here if he has learnt from his opening salvo over fences at the East Midlands’ track.

3.00 – Plumpton – Forest Jump

This class five staying handicap hurdle for horses rated 0-100 is not going to take an awful lot of winning with Monty’s Reward probably the safest choice as he keeps on churning out the performances at this level and takes a relative drop on grade after seeing the back side of Loup De Maulde for the second successive start at Huntingdon. Still, he looks quite exposed now and it is the lightly raced Chris Gordon runner Forest Jump which gets my vote.

By Mahler out of a King’s Theatre mare, the selection will probably have his best days over fences in time and over a deal further yet there was plenty to like about his closing eight and three quarter lengths third of 10 behind Inferno Sacree at this track over the minimum trip at the back end of February. Always in the front line, he was merely done for speed turning for home, but kept on well up the short run in to claim third close home. This extra yardage will only bring about improvement and there should be plenty more to come from this rangy sort as he progresses through the year.

4.00 – Plumpton – Heaven Smart

Course and distance top weight, Ramo, along with the consistent but one paced Sporting Ace should give the top weights a strong hand in this class three feature staying handicap hurdle, but both of them are set to give significant weight away to Heaven Smart, who has more room for improvement over this trip.

Zero for six under rules, but placed on two occasions, the in form Gary Moore (21% strike rate in the past fortnight) finally stepped him up to a trip last time out when he stayed on pleasingly at Ascot at the beginning of the month in what looked an above average novice handicap hurdle. He is beginning to get the hang of jumping as well after looking ungamely at the start of his career and Jamie Moore takes over from a conditional here which should help him step forward again. I fancy that JM will many plenty of use of him especially as the track is forecast to dry out so he can bring his guaranteed stamina into play.
