Bumper winner CARRIGEEN KAMPALA would ideally have settled better than she did on her hurdle debut at Worcester but she didn’t run at all badly behind a subsequent Cheltenham Festival winner and this is clearly an easier option. It’s hard to pick out an alternative but the ex-French Ilary De L’Ecu is likely to come good at some stage and perhaps Noonie will come on plenty for her hurdle debut and show something more in keeping with her Flat form.
The hurdling standard, albeit an ordinary one, is set by THREE MACKS and Lady Gwen in that order of preference. Princess Poppy and Moirai are possible improvers, while hurdles debutantes Blue Clover and Forever A Dove have possibilities on their best bumper form.
Back down in distance on only his second chase start, KEPLERIAN could well open his account provided the ground stays suitable (he evidently needs good going). Consistent Line Of Descent is second choice, ahead of Post No Bills and Blackcauseway.
Reve De Niamh has more to come over staying trips but this may rest between William Ewart and THEQUESTIONER. The former won easily at Bangor four weeks ago but he’s now 10lb higher and may have to give best to a rival who had been progressing well before a sloppy round of jumping at Sedgefield last month. He’s got a lower hurdle mark to exploit and has stamina in abundance.
With her 2m form having substance, FANCY STUFF (nap) looks interesting back at this trip and she’s well worth another chance. Luna Dora, who won well at Fakenham, is feared most ahead of Manimole and Stopherandgo.
Deteriorating ground would spell danger for some and others are out of sorts. ALI STAR BERT ran up against one who had dropped down the weights at Southwell last time out where he was no real threat but today’s extra distance should help and this isn’t competitive. Galop Du Bosc emerged from hibernation at Chepstow two starts ago and he is favourably treated at present so looks the main danger ahead of Kym Eyre who stays very well. Tel’Art is also in the reckoning.
The suggestion is CLARAS SOLDIER, who gave the impression he would have shown improved form but for being brought down at Southwell seven weeks ago. He’s in excellent hands and evidently has potential in handicaps. Glory Bridge (second choice) remains of interest and may yet show more progress, while last-time-out scorers Scherbobalob and Embolden are respected. Governor Green, provided he turns out quickly, also enters the reckoning.
Although VIROFLAY’s jumping became rather guessy in the closing stages at Exeter last month he had run well for a long way against a fair yardstick and this lesser test can suit. Perhaps the main danger can come from Sine Nomine ahead of Kaproyale.
